The State guideline for iron is 0.3 milligrams per liter. Your water contains 0.5 mg/l.The State guideline for manganese is 0.05 mg/l.Your water contains 0.12 mg/l.Neither of these concentrations are physiologically harmful, however they may cause discoloration problems. Also, the analysis revealed that trace amounts of a kerosene type petroleum product is in the water.Due to this the water should not be used for consumption. If you have any questions, please call my office at the Town Hall,644-251l ext.274. Very truly yours, f‘5 '7'20 ,t .4 Robert Deptula,R.S.Environmental Health Officer Enclosure ::2 . The water does not meet the requirements of the State Health Department for a potable water because the concentra— tion of certain chemical and physical elements exceeds ac— ceptable limits. The maximum acceptable color limit by the State is fif— teen units .This water sample exceeded that guideline as it exceeds the turbidity guideline of five (5). Also, the iron level of 4.4 milligrams per liter exceeds the State guideline of 0.3 mg./L.Additionally,the manganese level of 1.2 mg./L exceeds the State guideline of 0.05 mg./L. Finally, the water sample was analyzed for hydrocarbons and organohalides.Benzene was present at 30 parts per billion. The State Health Department action level for Benzene in drink— ing water is l part per billion.Ethylene Dibromide (EDB)was detected at 2.4 parts per billion. The State level for EDB in drinking water is 0.1 parts per billion. Since this water supply exceeds potability standards in several areas,it is strongly recommended that this supply not be consumed until potability standards can be met.Treatment may be necessary for removal of iron and manganese. The tur- bidity and color problems will most likely clear up once the iron and manganese is removed. The Benzene and EDB pollution most likely is related to contamination from gasoline. The source of this contamination must be discovered and removed. Also, the water must be resampled to determine the contaminant concentration. The Town has been informed by Katherine Bradley that herselt, James Bradley and their children are moving out of State. In view of these circumstances, item numbers 2,3,4,and 5 will not have to be corrected at this time. However, the dwelling cannot be occupied again until these items have been corrected, if this has not yet been accomplished.Additionally,in the event that the vacant dwelling should become a rodent harborage area,or other nuisance condition, necessary steps will have to be taken to correct those situations. It is felt at this time that an extension until October 2, 1986 can been granted to correct item numbers 1 and 5.An ex— ception to this would be the removal of the refrigerator with the door on it.This must be done immediately. Enclosed for your convenience is a copy of the original order. @{utf (waif #2 4/ Robert Déptula,R.S. Environmental Health Officer RD/chm ENCLOSURE:l. The water does not meet the requirements of the State Health Department for a potable water because the concentra— tion of certain chemical and physical elements exceeds ac— ceptable limits. The maximum acceptable color limit by the State is fif— teen units. This water sample exceeded that guideline as it exceeds the turbidity guideline of five (5). The State Health Department action level for Benzene in drink— ing water is 1 part per billion.Ethylene Dibromide (EDB)was detected at 2.4 parts per billion. The State level for EDB in drinking water is 0.1 parts per billion. Since this water supply exceeds potability standards in several areas,it is strongly recommended that this supply not be consumed until potability standards can be‘met.TreaUnent may be necessary for removal of iron and manganese. The tur— bidity and color problems will most likely clear up once the iron and manganese is removed. The Benzene and EDB pollution most likely is related to contamination from gasoline. The source of this contamination must be discovered and removed. Also, the water must be resampled to determine the contaminant concentration.
