As discussed, it is my understanding that alkali-aggregate reaction is an uncommon problem here in Connecticut. It is more common in Massachusetts. I was also informed that testing for ASR is expensive ($2500 range). Please let me know if you have received the attached memo and if you have any questions. Best regards, Tony Anthony J.Papa,PE,LEED AP TEC Engineering, LLC 116 Bramblebush Rd. Papa, PE Date: July 4,2005 Re: Existing Foundation Cracks-25 Paper Chase, South Windsor,CT As requested, I have visited the referenced project site on June 28,2005 to visually review the cracking exhibited within the existing foundation. The cracks appear to be the result of alkali- aggregate reaction. In most concrete, aggregates are more or less chemically inert. However, some aggregates react with the alkali hydroxides in concrete, causing expansion and cracking over a period of many years. Alkali-aggregate reaction has two forms—alkali-silica reaction(ASR)and alkali-carbonate reaction (ACR). ACR is relatively rare because aggregates susceptible to this phenomenon are less common and are usually unsuitable for use in concrete for other reasons. Alkali-silica reaction(ASR)is of more concern because aggregates containing reactive silica materials are more common. In ASR, aggregates containing certain forms of silica will react with alkali hydroxide in concrete to form a gel that swells as it absorbs water from the surrounding cement paste or the environment. These gels can swell and induce enough expansive pressure to damage concrete. Typical indicators of ASR are random map cracking and,in advanced cases, closed joints and spalled concrete. Petrographic examination can conclusively identify ASR. This requires a concrete core sample be removed form the existing damage concrete and sent to be laboratory tested. One such laboratory capable of this type of testing is Construction Testing Laboratories(847.965.7500,5400 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, Illinois 60077). J .J x.,tt':fid':; -,tea;'•, ::: %;,.t.... ,.<:;:.; a` 42101v{ As discussed, there is no clear repair solution for ASR. However, the problem should not be ignored as it will likely continue to cause damage and compromise the structural integrity of the existing foundation. When ASR-induced expansion and damage already has manifested itself in a field structure, there are some techniques that can help extend the service life of the structure as follows; • Provide adequate or improved drainage(to minimize availability of moisture). • Apply coatings to further limit moisture ingress. • Treat existing cracks to minimize future expansion and direct moisture ingress. • Restrain or confine expansion of structural elements with steel reinforcing and concrete. • Remove and replace portions of the foundation or provide alternate means of support for the structure. Crack injection should be considered where existing damage is limited. However, existing damage to portions of the foundation is advanced and may be cost prohibitive to repair. Reinforcing existing foundation walls with steel and concrete should be considered where damage is more advanced. Alternatively, simply removing and replacing portions of the foundation may prove to be easier and will be a reliable repair solution. Lastly, installation of a water-resistant membrane on the outside of existing foundations walls below grade should be included to limit moisture ingress. Initially, I would recommend that the location and extent of existing damage be documented on a foundation plan. An existing foundation plan may be available from the homeowner or from town records. The foundation plan should include dimensions and the approximate elevation of existing grades. This will help with the development of repair schemes and the overall planning and pricing of the project. I would also recommend that testing the concrete be considered to help confirm the problem. I trust this meets your needs at this time. Please contact me if you should have any questions.
