Re: Lally column removal at 174 Debbie Drive,South Windsor,CT
This method is for the removal of an existing lally column forthe basement center support
beam, resulting in a new span of 13'-6" One existing 2x10 will be removed and three 1-3/4"x9-
1/2" 1.9E LVLs will be added to that side. After removal of the existing 2x10, use a screw jack
adjacent to the existing center column and raise the existing beam approximately 3/4" This is
to account for anticipated dead load deflection under the new support conditions. Install the
three LVLs and secure one at a time using a temporary method such as framing nails. Then
secure the entire assembly together using 5" Fasten Master screws from each side,top and
bottom at 12" on center. New end support must be provided for the LVLs. A screw-type post is
recommended to achieve firm bearing in the existing condition. A minimum 5" wide plate shall
be provided for beam bearing. The column must have a minimum load rating of 7000 Ibs for an
unsupported height of 7 feet. Once the new beam is securely fastened and supported the
center support can slowly be lowered. If existing toe-nailing is still in place from the floor joists
above, no more is necessary. If not, provide a minimum of one 16d toe-nail from each joist into
