As this system is pre-engineered, actual piping configurations are flexible and much will be determined in the field. The major guidance on limitations are as follows: Maximum pipe lengths and number of fittings on each cylinder's piping to be in accordance with Figure 4-7 on page 4-6 of the Kidde Installation and design manual (copy attached). In particular, we note that the cylinders being piped to the far corners of the hazard area are very close to the limitations on piping from the cylinder to the first tee. Our options during field installation to prevent exceeding this limitation will include moving the bottles left or right or even up, as the case may be, to shorten the amount of supply piping needed and/or a combination of lengthening the piping used downstream of the first tee in order to shorten the supply line. Much will be determined by available locations for the bottles along the perimeter of the hazard area. The distances the bottles can be "spread out" is limited by the amount of copper actuation tubing allowed, as detailed in Table AD2-10 of page AD2-9 of the manual (attached).. With nine system cylinders, a total of 106 feet of actuation tubing is permissible, therefore, the nine bottles could be spread out along the long (90') side of the hazard area and the actuation tubing running from tank to tank will not exceed the allowable limit. Detector spacing is 20' maximum (see attached pg. 4-8), requiring three detectors in the 45' direction and 5 detectors in the 90' direction. The XV control system can accommodate 2 individual link lines, each with limitations per Table AD-9 on page AD2- 9 (attached). At 200' per line and a max of 40 detectors and 50 corner pulleys, staying within these limitations is easy to accomplish (see attached Detection Detail Diagram) CT Lic. #1730042 • MA-CR. 1097 ` Y NFPA® MEMBER e OPRROGER FIRE EQUIPMENT FIRE PROTECTION SPECIALIST GAGNIER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE , P.O. South Windsor, CT HAI project#9250-002 Hughes Associates, Inc. (HAI)has been consulting with Atlantic Plywood in the development of a protected flammable liquids storage room and associated mixing area for their facility in South Windsor, CT. Atlantic Plywood has submitted plans for this project and received a building permit for this project. You have received revised plans for the construction of these spaces from the designer retained by Atlantic Plywood. The storage room will house small (one and five gallon) containers, as well as an occasional 55-gallon drum of class I13 through class II flammable and combustible liquids. Some of the storage will be on shelves to only about six feet high, and some will be on pallets on the floor of the room. The adjacent room will contain a mixing bench/table, and two small (3-foot square opening) spray booths, and paint can shakers for the blending of customer-desired custom colors. i Offices located throughout the continental U.S.,Europe,Korea,Singapore,and Taiwan i Mr.Summers June 26,2006 Page 2 Plans show that the construction of the room will be rated for two-hour fire resistance, with automatic closing doors rated for minimum one and a half hour fire resistance. This includes the entire room, walls and ceiling. There are plans to use the space above the room for file storage. A small containment curb will be provided at the doors of the room, to hold a spill from the largest container that enters the room. The curb will be based on holding the contents of a 55- gallon drum in the room. There will be no floor drains or scuppers. The rooms will be located on an outside wall, and the storage room will have outside access. Ventilation will be provided on a non-mechanical basis for the storage room, and through the spray booths for the mixing room. Classified electrical equipment will be provided for the spray boots, and there will be no electrical equipment within five feet of the mixing bench/table. Classified electrical equipment will also be provided for the storage room. The entire building is protected by automatic sprinklers. Atlantic Plywood has agreed to provide the following improvements as part of this project: • an additional dry chemical extinguisher at the entrance to each room, rated at minimum 40-BC • switches that interlock the spray guns with the airflow in the booths so that if the airflow is too low across the face of the booth, the spray gun can't function • up to three(as necessary) flammable liquids storage cabinets in the mixing area to hold open containers, once they have been removed from storage for use Based on the above criteria, Atlantic Plywood is requesting relief from the provision of automatic sprinkler protection for these new areas, and in particular, for the storage room. Under section 903.1.1 of the Connecticut Fire Safety Code, alternative protection can be considered for approval by your office. Atlantic Plywood requests permission to install a fixed, total flooding automatic dry chemical system in the storage room, and local application systems in both of the spray booths, and the associated duct work. HUGHES ASSOCIATES, INC. Mr.Summers June 26,2006 Page 3 Design and installation of these systems will be in conformance to National Fire Protection Association(NFPA) 17-2002,Standard for the Installation of Dry Chemical Systems. The systems will be monitored for integrity by the existing building fire alarm system, so that discharge will be transmitted as a fire alarm to the alarm monitoring company. Manual pull stations to discharge the systems will be provided as part of each system. Atlantic Plywood respectfully submits this request for our consideration. If there are an Yw p Y q Y Y questions, feel free to contact me at any time. Sincerely, Lawrence J. Wenzel,P.E. HUGHES ASSOCIATES, INC. Mr.Summers June 26,2006 Page 4 HUGHES ASSOCIATES, INC. Detector spacing is 20' maximum(see attached pg. 4-8), requiring three detectors in the 45' direction and 5 detectors in the 90' direction. The XV control system can accommodate 2 individual link lines, each with limitations per Table AD-9 on page AD2- 9 (attached). Please contact our office for a final inspection. All permits should be closed by August 15, 2008. Should you have any problem meeting this date, please send our office a letter stating the reasons.
