P/N 17029 Page 7 of 70 GENERAL INFORMATION System Description The Amerex CPS is designed and tested to provide total flooding fire protection. This system is manufactured by the Amerex Corporation of Trussville,Alabama. The Amerex CPS is a pre-engineered clean agent fire suppression system as defined by NFPA 2001 — Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems. As a pre-engineered system each tank is piped to its nozzle or nozzle set independent of any other tank that may be discharged simultaneously, outlet's cannot be connected to a common manifold. Specific limitations are contained in this manual defining pipe sizes, maximum pipe lengths, use of elbows and tees, nozzle sizes, nozzle orifice sizes, and nozzle coverage. To assure proper performance of the system and to achieve flow rates and nozzle pressures within the listing and approval of this system these parameters must not be exceeded. Although the automatic fire detection and actuation system is not included in this manual it is an integral part of the total clean agent fire suppression system. To assure rapid fire detection and improve the chances for complete fire control by the clean agent system a compatible automatic smoke detection system should be provided. Listings and Approvals The Amerex CPS is Listed by Underwrites Laboratories(UL)and Underwrites Laboratories Canada (ULC)and Approved by Factory Mutual(FM)as a pre-engineered clean agent fire suppression system. The system has been evaluated and tested in accordance with U. L. 2166—Standard for Halocarbon Clean Agent Extinguishing System Units. Design The system is comprised of an agent tank/discharge valve assembly filled with the required weight of HFC- 227ea to deliver a design concentration between 6.25% (7%for FM Approval)and 10.5%(for normally occupied spaces)to the space being protected. Nozzle orifice selection is predetermined based on tank fill weight and the number of nozzles connected to the tank to deliver the agent in 5 to 10 seconds. Pipe size, maximum pipe length, and maximum number of fittings are also predetermined to assure the flow rate and nozzle pressure are within the listed/approved parameters. This agent was developed as an environmentally safe alternative to Halon 1301 and is intended to prevent business interruption due to the risks of fire and to prevent the loss of irreplaceable, high value assets from fire. HFC-227ea is on the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's(EPA)Significant New Alternatives Policy(SNAP) Program list as acceptable for use in occupied spaces. HFC-227ea is included in NFPA 2001, Standard on Clean Agent Fires Extinguishing Systems with exposure limits of 5 minutes for design concentrations up to 10.5%. The exposure times are based on analysis of the agent using a physiologically based pharmacokinetic(PBPK)human model. The PBPK model is accepted by the US EPA and NFPA 2001 Technical Committee. Exposure times in NFPA 2001 are intended for unwanted system discharges where the agent is not exposed to fire or other extremely high heat sources. The primary extinguishing mechanism of HFC-227ea is heat absorption. It absorbs heat at the molecular level faster than the amount of heat generated by the combustion reaction and essentially ceases the combustion reaction since it cannot sustain itself. Although the physical mechanism of heat removal is the predominant mechanism of flame extinguishment, there is a chemical contribution to flame extinguishment which arises from the thermal decomposition of small amounts of HFC-227ea in the flame. For an automatically operated fire suppression system for Class"A" hazards the minimum design concentration is 6.25% by volume(7%for FM Approval). For systems protecting Class'A"hazards that are manually operated the minimum design concentration is 6.8% by volume(7.6%for FM Approval). When a halocarbon extinguishing agent such as HFC-227ea is exposed to extremely high temperatures from a fire or other heat source the agent will breakdown or decompose. One of the byproducts formed during decomposition is hydrogen fluoride(HF)which can be detected by an acidic odor. To reduce the amount of HF that is generated durin, discharge on a fire the discharge time must be no longer than 10 seconds. Recharge agent is available in either 160 lb. (72.6 kg)or 1,200 lb. (544.3 kg)containers. The Material Safety Data Sheet(MSDS)with Hazardous Material Information System(HMIS)data can be found in the Appendix of this manual. Agent Tank Assembly The agent tanks assemblies consist of steel tanks manufactured in accordance with DOT4BW500 fitted with a brass discharge valve and steel siphon tube. The tank assemblies are available in two sizes, each with various fill weights. The size designation indicates the nominal maximum fill weight for each size and each tank can be filled from the minimum to maximum weights at the increments shown below. Each tank has a minimum fill density of approximately 25 pounds per cubic foot and a maximum fill density of approximately 71 pounds per cubic foot. The tanks are super pressurized with dry nitrogen to 360 psig(24.8 bar)at 70°F(21°C). The agent is stored in the tank in liquid form. The bracket straps are designed to fit into a back channel supplied by others. Approved back channel is Unistrute Channel Series P1000T, 1.6 in.X 1.6 in. (40.6 mm X 40.6 mm). To securely hold the tank in position during discharge one bracket assembly is required per tank. Each bracket strap is notched for insertion into the back channel then rotated 90 degrees and fastened together to properly align and secure the tank. The back channel must be mounted securely to a rigid vertical surface with the tank assembly resting fully on the floor or rigid surface. n Q U tX' YIOE 1y' T►KK , {ate IC Tank Valve Assembly The discharge valve assembly consists of a machined brass valve body, machined brass primary outlet adapter with 1%"female NPT threads, plugged 3/8'secondary outlettactuation port, brass burst disc assembly designed to rupture at 900 psig(62 bar), machined brass spool assembly with internal ball check, machined brass top cap with valve core for valve actuation, pressure gauge,low-pressure switch, and steel siphon tube threaded into the valve body. The valve assembly Is shipped with an anti-recoil safety shipping cap installed in the outlet and chained to the valve body. A 3/e"pilot port is located opposite the valve outlet and can be used to provide pressure to open valves on additional tanks in the system. A pipe plug is installed in the pilot port of the valve assembly and would be removed and replaced with a 3/e"to Y. reducing fitting for use as a pilot port. This port can also be used as a secondary valve outlet using a 3/e"to'/:"adapter to provide unbalanced split for use in protecting a room(or large room)with the primary outlet and area under a raised floor(or small room)with the secondary outlet. When the valve is in the closed,un-fired state,a very small bleed orifice through the center of the piston maintains equal pressure on both the top and the bottom of the piston. Because the sealing diameter of the top of the piston is larger than the sealing diameter of the bottom of the piston, there Is a resulting force downward, which contains the agent in the cylinder. Actuation is accomplished by venting the pressure from the top of the piston. When the valve core is depressed the pressure in the top chamber of the valve(space above the spool)is vented and the rapid flow causes the ball check in the piston to seal. Maximum current is 600 mA Connector (.6 Amps)and maximum supervisory current is 30 mA(0.03 Amp). The actuator is polarity sensitive and will only operate when DC voltage is applied in the correct polarity. When DC voltage is applied in the polarity to operate the actuator a stainless steel pin is forced down opening the valve core in the valve assembly. The actuator is mechanically latched and must be manually reset by pushing the pin up until it snaps in the set position. On multiple tank systems the electric actuator will open the pilot tank and all other tanks will be opened pneumatically using the pilot tank pressure to operate pneumatic actuators. The electric actuator body is steel construction with a brass knurled swivel nut and stainless actuation pin to depress the valve core. The electric actuator assembly has a connector secured with a center locking screw. This arrangement facilitates easy installation and service. If the connector is removed from the actuator the releasing circuit will open and a trouble signal will be sent to the releasing Knurled Swivel Nut panel. Local Manual Valve Actuator Assembly(PIN 17001) Palm Button A local manual actuator is available as an option. This manually operated actuator is , attached to the top of the electric actuator and provides a means to manually open the valve. The actuator consists of a brass body, stainless steel pin,and steel safety ring pin. To open the valve manually the ring pin is removed and the strike button depressed forcing the electric actuator pin to release and depress the valve core. Knurled Nut Ring Pin Pneumatic Valve Actuator Assembly(PIN 17019) Pneumatic Actuator A pneumatic actuator is used to open tank valves using pressure from the pilot tank. The pneumatic actuator is brass with a brass piston and pin. The pneumatic actuator receives pressure from the pilot port of the pilot tank through a check valve. To reset the actuator pressure must first be bled down between the check valve and pneumatic actuator then the pin must be pushed back to the set position. The air/agent mixture is slightly heavier than air and any openings in or near the floor will result in the mixture escaping the space. Small openings found in the ceiling, such as air returns, leakage around light fixtures, etc.are typically not significant in regards to maintaining,or holding, concentration. Openings under and leakage around doors, leakage around outlets, leakage around windows, etc.should be sealed to reduce loss of agent after discharge. To determine the amount of leakage in the hazard a room integrity test using door fan technology can be conducted. This test, outlined in the Annex of NFPA 2001,will estimate the equivalent leakage area(ELA)and,if conducted properly, provide an indication of hold time. It should be noted that the accuracy of the test results will be improved if the location and size of the leaks are known. If the location and size are not known the typical integrity test program assumes a worst case scenario with the total ELA divided 50%in the ceiling and 50%in the floor. Smoke generators/pencils can be used to locate sources of leakage which can then be sealed. If the system does not use an automatic detection and actuation system and can only be operated by manual means the design concentration for Class'A"hazards is 6.8%(7.6%for FM Approval). The design concentrations are based on the minimum extinguishing concentrations plus the safety factor as required in NFPA 2001. Class'B"hazards typically require higher design concentrations and are designed for protection of the fuel with the highest cup burner test value. Consult Amerex for assistance in determining the applicability and design concentration for a clean agent system for any Class"B"hazard. Protection of rooms that are considered normally occupied can be designed for concentrations up to 10.5%which has been determined by the US EPA and NFPA 2001 Technical Committee to be acceptable for exposure times up to 5 minutes. Refer to NFPA 2001 for exposure time limits for concentration beyond 10.5%protecting spaces that are NOT considered normally occupied. Room Volume The room volume is calculated by multiplying the length X width X height. If the room has an irregular shape it may be necessary to divide the room into rectangular sections and add the volumes of each section to determine the total volume. Use the appropriate formula to calculate the room volume for geometric shapes other that rectangular The volume used to determine the amount of agent is the empty,or gross, volume. A volume that is open to the room being protected must be added to the room volume. This may include HVAC ducts that do not have automatic dampers located at the perimeter of the room. The volume of material and equipment located in the room cannot be deducted from the gross volume. The volume of a solid object located in the room that cannot be removed and is non-permeable can be deducted from the gross volume. If the solid object can be removed,is not a permanent fixture in the room, the volume cannot be deducted. Minimum Room Temperature The minimum room temperature is required to calculate the amount of agent required to reach the desired design concentration. This will need to be provided by the facility manager or owner of the building. As an industry leader in innovative design of products that provide the quality and performance you expect,Amerex has developed the CPS system to be the most cost efficient clean agent system available. The modular design incorporates pre-assembled wiring harnesses and keyed locking connectors on all electrical components to assist you in a simple and confident in- stallation.Agent tanks are available in two sizes having a diameter of ten inches making tank location in confined spaces easier. Tanks are charged with FM-200 in increments of two pounds in a small tank or three pounds in a larger tank for a custom installation without unnecessary expense. Electrical actuators are used for system actuation and can be reset, reducing the number of components to be replaced during service after discharge. The CPS system is designed to use schedule 40 pipe, giving you easy access to the materials you need to complete the installation. Nozzles are available in three designs; comer, side wall, and center room for flexibilty in system installation to protect those-challenging'areas. The Amerex CPS is monitored by an electrical control panel that has a battery back-up for 24 hour protection during power failure. Photoelectric smoke detectors are used for detection and are cross zoned to reduce the potential for unwanted system discharge.A bell and hom/strobe device alarm when fire conditions are present. All electrical circuitF are supervised and factory terminated. The chemical name for the agent is Heptafluoropropane (CF3CHFCF3), identified in NFPA 2001 as HFC-227ea. This agent was de- veloped as an environmentally safe alternative to Halon 1301 and is intended to prevent business interruption due to the risks of fire and to prevent the loss of irreplaceable, high value assets from fire. HFC-227ea is on the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program list as acceptable for use in occupied spaces. HFC-227ea is included in NFPA 2001, Standard on Clean Agent Fires Extinguishing Systems with exposure limits of 5 min- utes for design concentrations up to 10.5%. The primary extinguishing mechanism of HFC-227ea is heat absorption. It absorbs heat at the mo- lecular level faster than the amount of heat generated by the combustion reaction and essentially ceases the combustion reaction. Although the physical mechanism of heat removal is the predomi- nant mechanism of flame extinguishment, there is a chemical contribution to flame extinguishment which arises from the thermal decomposition of small amounts of HFC-227ea in the flame. For an automatically operated fire suppression system protecting Class A hazards, a minimum design concentration of 7.0% by volume is recommended. For systems protecting Class A haz- ards that are manually operated, a minimum design concentration of 7.6% by volume is required. Typically, Class B hazards have higher extinguishing concentrations and all Class B systems are designed with a 309% safety factor. Amerex Clean Agen Agent Tanks: Available in two sizes, each having a diameter of ten inches. Tanks are charged with FM-200 ® in increments of two pounds in a small tank or three pounds in the larg- er tank. The tanks are pressurized to 360 psi @ 70°F and available in agent weights of 16 to 44 lbs. or 46 to 130 lbs., respectively.Agent tanks are constructed of low carbon steel with a polyurethane paint finish. Discharge valve assembly consists of brass and stainless steel components with rubber seals. System utilizes mechani- cal and electrical actuators for system discharge. Up to 5 additional agents tanks can be actuated using pneumat- ic actuators for a total of 6 simultaneously discharged tanks. Each agent tank includes a factory installed low pressure switch to monitor the tank's condition and sig- nal the releasing panel if pressure drops below 285 psi. A unique dual-outlet valve provides capability to protect two rooms of different sizes. or a room and under floor plenum with one tank. Electric Releasing Control Panel: Provides supervised circuit monitoring and contains a back-up battery providing 24 hour protection during pow- er failure. Detection / Manual Actuation: Photoelectric smoke detectors are cross zoned to re- duce unwanted discharge. Detectors are provided with ,; keyed locking connectors. Wiring harnesses are factory assembled in pre-determined lengths and are equipped with matching keyed locking connectors. The manual pull stations, used to release the system, are double action. A combination pull station/abort is available that includes an abort switch. Alarming Device: A bell and horn/strobe design give both audible and vi- sual indication that fire conditions are present. An alarm bell rings when smoke is detected and the horn/strobe operates to signal the start of the release time delay. )ystdm Components s Yam. CABLE: Cable assemblies used on all circuits except the release circuit are 4-conductor plenum rated cable type CMP complying with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) Article 760 for use on power limited fire alarm circuits. Each of the four conductors is stranded 18 AWG cop- per with extruded insulation. An aluminum shield covers the 4 con- ductors with a white mylar outer jacket. The release circuit is non-power limited and the cable assembly is type NPLF complying with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code)Article 760 for use on non-power limited fire alarm circuits. This 2-conduc- tor cable assembly is rated for 600 volts. Each conductor is stranded 18 AWG copper with flame retardant PVC insulation and an alumi- num/polyester shield covers the pair. The outer jacket is black, flame retardant, low temperature rated with a high temperature rating of 90°C. Single four conductor cable assemblies and single two conductor release cable assemblies can be pulled through '/z" conduit feeding/ pulling the receptacle end through. multiple cable assemblies run in conduit should use 3/4" or larger conduit. Since the release circuit is non-power limited, the release circuit cable must run in its own con- duit or raceway. Each device and each cable assembly include four position, keyed, locking connectors. The connectors are Molex® brand Mini-Fit Jr. ® model. The plug and receptacle housings have a UL flammability rating of 94V-0. The terminals are gold plated to reduce oxidation contamination and provide good electrical connec- tions for the low voltage and low current circuits of the releasing panel. Discharge Pressure Switch: The discharge pressure switch is used to send a signal to the releas- ing panel when the valve has been opened. In addition to sending a positive signal of automatic actuation it also serves as an initiating device. sending a signal to secure the protected room if the valve has been operated manually by the manual local actuator. Amerex provides this discharge pressure switch with a pre-installed wire harness for connection to the panel using a junction box har- ness and cable assemblies. Nozzles: Brass discharge nozzles are available in three configurations; a 90' f 1-orifice nozzle for comer of room locations, a 180' two orifice nozzle for side wall locations, and a 3600 four orifice nozzle for center of room locations. Two and four orifice nozzles have their orifices on 90 degree centers. Amerex Corporation P.O. This compact, cost effective, intelligent addressable control panel supports up to 50 addres- sable devices of any type of detectors and modules. With an extensive list of powerful features, the MS-905OUD programs just like Fire-Lite's larger products, yet fits into applications pre- viously served only by conventional panels. The MS-9050UD's integral DACT transmits system status (alarms, troubles, AC loss, etc.) to a Central Station via the public switched telephone network. The power supply and all electronics are contained on a single circuit board supported on a new quick install chassis and housed in a metal cabinet. Available accessories include remote annunciators and reverse polarity/city box transmitter.
