The upper and lower cores has a relatively high w/c ratio of 0.6 that was retempered;typical concrete quality concrete has a w/c <0.5. • The pyrrhotite content in the aggregate is high and unusual. • The deterioration of the concrete in the house foundation is due to the pyrrhotite in the aggregates. The pyrrhotite in the aggregates oxidizes and reacts with the paste, leading to the dissolution of the paste, internal cracking, and formation of ettringite. • Deterioration of the concrete in the house foundation is stronger in the upper core, with stronger evidence of internal sulfate attack, with deposits of gypsum and ettringite in cracks, and voids, as well as formation of gypsum, altering and replacing the paste. • Less than 20% of the pyrrhotite is completely oxidized, with the remaining pyrrhotite having a potential for causing additional detrimental reactions that may further deteriorate the concrete. 3.3 Concrete Strength Test Results: Four concrete core samples (C26-IL-1, C26-1L-2, C26-2U-1, and C26-2U-2) were tested for compressive strength (by the ASTM C42 method) and indicated Compressive Strengths of 4,080, 3,550, 2,950,and 2,930 psi, respectively. 3.4 Limitations This report is subject to the limitations included in Attachment 7. (TEC Services) is pleased to submit this report of our petrographic evaluation of two (2) cores drilled horizontally from residential concrete foundations for the residence on 12 Wapping Ave.,South Windsor,Connecticut. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the reason(s) for deterioration of the concrete. Our report includes background information, core information, petrographic observations, conclusions, figures (scans, photos, sketches, and photomicrographs), Appendix I on some of the technical terms used by petrographers, and Appendix II with a discussion of pyrrhotite in concrete. PROVIDED CORE SAMPLE On June 3, 2016, 2 cores, nominally 4" in diameter, were received by TEC Services in Lawrenceville, Georgia. These cores were taken from upper (marked as "U") and lower levels (marked as "L") of the concrete foundations. The upper core was taken 27-inches from the top of the concrete foundation while the lower core was taken 51-inches below the top of the foundation. The cores were drilled horizontally, and taken from the interior to the exterior. PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION OF CONCRETE(ASTM C856) Preparation To maximize the opportunity to identify deterioration in the concrete, the cores were diamond sawn into longitudinal sections perpendicular to the top of the foundation (Figures la, 2a) and then the flat surface was polished. Cracks in the concrete were noted and sketched in Figures 1b and 2b. Thin sections were prepared of a cross section across the interior of the companion half cores. Sketches of the location of the thin sections in relation to the cores are provided as Figures 3b and 4b. The thin sections were prepared by initially vacuum impregnating the thin section portion of the concrete in blue-dyed epoxy. The impregnated surface was ground flat and adhered to the surface of a glass slide. The concrete adhered to the glass slide was ground to a thickness of 30 microns to complete the thin sections. The remaining portion no longer adhered to the glass slide, commonly referred to as a billet, was ground and polished. Photos of the polished billets and thin sections are provided as Figures 3a,and 4a. The thin sections were examined with a polarized light microscope at magnifications of 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400X. Our evaluations were performed in accordance with the applicable sections of ASTM C856, Standard Practice for Petrographic Examination of Hardened Concrete. Our significant petrographic observations are provided below. General Observations The concrete is internally cracked in the upper and lower cores(Figures 1b, 2b). Most of the cracks have a "random" pattern. These cracks go through both the aggregate and the paste, indicating that the expansion is related to expansion of the aggregate, although expansion of the cement paste may have also occurred from associated chemical reactions. Some of the cracks in the cross section of the concrete appear to originate in the coarse aggregate particles. Table 1.Summary of Visual and Petrographic Observations Carbonation Depth Binder Est. Coarse Aggregate Observations • The coarse aggregate is of primarily crushed stone comprised primarily of pyrrhotite-laden granofels with minor biotite schist, and mafic rocks (Figures 5 — 24). The aggregates are equigranular to elongated and subangular. Major minerals present include garnet, pyrrhotite, pyrite, chlorite, muscovite, biotite, amphiboles, pyroxenes, feldspars, quartz, sillimanite, sericite, and minor graphite. Pyrrhotite is ubiquitously present and may occur as bands, veins, and small blebs, with some readily oxidized and replaced with goethite and/or hematite. • The coarse aggregate appears to be well graded and well distributed. The maximum grain size is Y„ a Page 2 of 27 Report of Petrographic Evaluation August 312016 Investigation of Concrete Residential Foundations TEC Services Project No.TEC 15-6043.7 House:C-26,12 Wapping Ave.,South Windsor,CT TEC Lab/D:16-602 • There is a potential for late-slow alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) of the coarse aggregate in both the upper and lower core due to the presence of strained, myrmekitic (Figures 31), and microcrystaIline quartz. No ASR gel was observed. Fine Aggregate Observations • The fine aggregate is comprised mainly of manufactured sand and a smaller quantity of natural sand. The fine aggregate consists of angular grains of quartz, biotite, and feldspars. Chunks of mostly massive, subangular to angular pyrrhotite grains was observed (Figures 11, 12). Fine aggregate grains may also be solution-pitted in areas of degradation. The fine aggregate is densely distributed in the paste. • There is a potential of late slow-alkali reactivity of the coarse aggregates due to the presence of strained and myrmekite quartz. No alkali-silica reactive(ASR)gel was observed. Paste Observations • The concrete was made with portland cement. In each of the core samples, the maximum grain size of the cement and the mineralogy indicates a Type I cement. No supplemental cementitious materials such as fly ash or slag were present in the core samples. • Visual estimates of air content for the foundation samples are —4 - 6% but the percentage is difficult to estimate as the air voids may be in deteriorated cement paste. • The original water cement ratio (w/c)was low in the upper and lower cores, approximately—0.4, then retempered to —0.6 (Figures 32 — 34). Concrete typically is designed with a low w/c, generally 0.4 to 0.5. The higher w/c ratio would result in lower strengths and durability. • The paste is generally soft, and can be scratched with a Moh's Hardness 2 tip, especially in areas where FA grains have been solution-pitted, and areas of gypsum growth. The paste otherwise is no harder than a Moh's hardness 3. • The paste in the upper core is of generally of poor quality, due to strong internal sulfate attack with formation of gypsum in voids and replacing paste. The voids and cracks otherwise may be filled with densely packed ettringite. Gypsum was not observed in the lower core, but densely packed ettringite was abundant. (Figures 23—30). • The aggregate-paste bond is poor, often with a gap. These gaps and cracks may be filled with sulfates such as ettringite and gypsum. The gaps appear to have formed because of expansion of the cement paste (Figures 23,24). Page 3 of 27 Report of Petrographic Evaluation August 312016 Investigation of Concrete Residential Foundations TEC Services Project No.TEC 15-6043.7 House:C-26,12 Wapping Ave.,South Windsor,CT TEC lab ID:16-602 Pyrrhotite Observations • Pyrrhotite was observed in the aggregate. Almost all (up to 98%) of the coarse aggregate had some amount of pyrrhotite. See Table 2 for calculated count percentage on the coarse aggregate. It is unusual to observe any pyrrhotite in aggregate. These concentrations are unusually high. Table 2. Count of the number of coarse aggregate particles containing any amount of pyrrhotite. House Core ID Pyrrhotite Count CA YES NO % 12 Wapping Ave, C-26-11-1 104 2 98 South Windsor,CT C-26-21- 112 4 97 Average 97 • The amount of pyrrhotite in each aggregate particle varies largely from <1% up to 99%.Varieties of pyrrhotite include whole, massive euhedral pyrrhotite (Figure 5, 6), mm-scale pyrrhotite bands within aggregate (Figure 7, 8), and finely disseminated blebs (Figure 9, 10). It was also observed that massive pyrrhotite grains were present in paste that appear as fine aggregate particles (Figures 11, 12). It is likely that these could be pieces of pyrrhotite that was broken off from the coarse aggregate particles during the crushing and/or mixing of the coarse aggregates. Occasionally, pyrite may occur with pyrrhotite(Figures 13, 14). • Some of the pyrrhotite observed has also oxidized and dissolved into the paste, creating distinct "rust" stains that often leads to cracking, and soft dissolution byproducts. These cracks often originate from the separation planes within the aggregate associated with pyrrhotite, extending into the paste and in and around other aggregates, often creating a separated gap. (Figures 17— 24). • The oxidation of pyrrhotite results in the formation of sulfur acids. This may lead to the dissolution and weakening of the paste, and the formation of popcorn calcite (PCD) in the dissolved paste(Figures 26,27). • Less than 20% of the pyrrhotite is completely oxidized (visual examination). The remaining pyrrhotite has the potential for causing additional detrimental reactions that may further deteriorate the concrete. Page 4 of 27 Report of Petrographic Evaluation August 312016 Investigation of Concrete Residential Foundations TEC Services Project No.TEC 15-6043.7 House:C-26,12 Wapping Ave.,South Windsor,CT TEC Lob ID:16-602 DISCUSSION ON PYRRHOTITE DEGRADATION IN CONCRETE Pyrrhotite, with a chemical formula of Fe(l_x)S2i is an iron sulfide mineral that is naturally occurring in various igneous and metamorphic rocks. Pyrrhotite, under atmospheric conditions, is an unstable mineral, especially when exposed to oxygen and water. Pyrrhotite oxidizes readily when first exposed to water and oxygen, which may occur as early as the quarrying process. It breaks down, expansively cracks, and forms iron oxides and hydroxides, along with other minerals, usually sulfates, when the acid and sulfate ion formed during the oxidation of pyrrhotite reacts with the components in the concrete. The deterioration of the concrete is known as internal sulfate attack. It is the cause of expansive cracking within the cement paste due to the formation of ettringite, gypsum, and thaumasite as well as further propagating any existing cracks, and perhaps degrading some of the aggregate and paste, thus affecting the strength and integrity of the concrete. The oxidation products of pyrrhotite may also yield a larger volume than the original mineral, causing surface pop-outs in addition to expansion and pattern cracking. Pyrite, FeS2, another common sulfide mineral that may also be found in aggregate, behaves in a similar way, but reacts much slower than pyrrhotite. CONCLUSIONS The following conclusions are based on the review of the provided background information, visual observations of the provided samples, petrographic observations and our experience. • The foundation concrete appears to be of relatively poor quality from the time of construction. The upper and lower cores has a relatively high w/c ratio of 0.6 that was retempered; typical concrete quality concrete has a w/c<0.5. • Deterioration of the concrete in the house foundation is stronger in the upper core, with stronger evidence of internal sulfate attack, with deposits of gypsum and ettringite in cracks, and voids,as well as formation of gypsum, altering and replacing the paste. • Less than 20% of the pyrrhotite is completely oxidized, with the remaining pyrrhotite having a potential for causing additional detrimental reactions that may further deteriorate the concrete. It is a brass-colored mineral that is usually weakly magnetic and therefore relatively easy to distinguish from the three minerals (pyrite, marcasite, and pyrrhotite) often considered to be "iron pyrites." Pyrrhotite, under atmospheric conditions, is an unstable mineral, especially when exposed to oxygen and water vapor. Pyrrhotite oxidizes readily when first exposed to water and oxygen, which may occur as early as the quarrying process. Mineral specimens collected at quarries readily degrade by a process known to museum curators and mineral collectors as "pyrite disease.'" The rate of oxidation is high , with the greatest rates at normal temperatures occurring at greater than 50%RH and becoming relatively constant at 60% RH3 The ability of pyrrhotite as an aggregate to deteriorate concrete is well known4S In concrete", pyrrhotite breaks down, expansively cracks, and forms iron oxides and hydroxides, and acid. Minerals, usually sulfates, also form when the acid and sulfate ion formed during the oxidation of pyrrhotite reacts with the components in the concrete. This form of deterioration of the concrete is known as internal sulfate attack. In concrete, which has a pH of>11,the reaction is an inorganic chemical reaction that is not assisted by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is not active at the normal pH of concrete$ The inorganic oxidation of pyrrhotite is the cause of expansive cracking within the cement paste consequent to the formation of ettringite, gypsum, and thaumasite as well as the further propagation of any existing cracks, and perhaps degrading some of the aggregate and paste to reduce the strength and integrity of the concrete. The oxidation products of pyrrhotite yield a larger volume than the original mineral, which may also cause surface pop-outs in addition to expansion and pattern cracking of the concrete surface. Pyrite, FeS2, perhaps the most common sulfide mineral found in aggregate, behaves in a similar way, but reacts much slower than pyrrhotite, which reacts approximately 100 times faster than pyrite9 McDonald,G.,Elder,A.,and Shelton,S.,2005,Appendix U:Curatorial Care of Paleontological and Geological Collections:National Park Service Museum Handbook,Part I,Appendix U,54p. 2 Belzile,N.,Chen,Y.,Cai,M.,Li,Y.,2004,A review on pyrrhotite oxidation: Jour.Geochemical Expl.V.84, 65-76 Stenger,H.F., 1982,Oxidation of Sulfide Minerals VII.Effect of Temperature and Relative Humidity on the Oxidation of Pyrrhotite:Chemical Geology,V.35,p.281-295 Northrup,T., 1965,High-Density Concrete for Gamma and Neutron Attenuation:Oak Ridge National Lab.Report ORNL-3704,69 p. 5 Dolar-Mantuani,L., 1983,Handbook of Concrete Aggregates,A Petrographic and Technological Evaluation: Noyes Publications, park Ridge,NJ,p.73 6 Duchesne,J.and Fournier,B.,2013, Deterioration of Concrete by the Oxidation of Sulphide Minerals in the Aggregate:Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture,Aug.2013,V.7,N.8(Serial No.69),p.922-931 'Oliveira,1.,S.H.P.Cavalaro,S.,and.Aguado,A.,2014,Evolution of pyrrhotite oxidation in aggregates for concrete:Materiales de Construcci6n,V.64,Issue 316,pl-9 8 Nickolson,R.,Scharer,J.,Kwong,E.,and Janzen,M., 1998,Laboratory Studies Of Pyrrhotite Oxidation:Final Report to CANMET-Contract No.23440-4-1198/01, 117 p. 9 Nickolson,R.and Scharer,J., 1994,Laboratory Studies of Pyrrhotite Oxidation Kinetics: Chapter 2 in Environmental Geochemistry of Sulfide Oxidation,ACS Symposium Series,Vol.550,p. 14-30 Page 27 of 27 GEODESIGN,INC.
