Metallurgy and Qualities Ductile Cast Iron (Magnification 250X) ETfr J! R rl er_,rwlft) Gray Cast Iron (Magnification 250X) © 1993 Griffin Pipe Products Co. Metallurgy GriffinTm Ductile Iron Pipe is a product which has unique and desirable capa- bilities. This pipe, combining the physical strength of mild steel with the longevity of gray iron, also has the ability to flex under stress, making it less vulnerable to abnormal con- ditions under which other pipe materials may fail. Ductile iron is made by a metal- lurgical process which involves the addition of magnesium into molten iron. While the basic composition of the iron remains unaltered, the graphite structure becomes nodular rather than flake. The tensile strength is increased to that of mild steel, but above all, the metal is now "DUCTILE". Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe is centrifu- gally cast in water-cooled metal molds. Rigid process control is exer cised throughout the manufacturing cycle. Casting is followed by heat treatment in a continuous annealing oven after which the pipe passes through the various finishing opera- tions which include hydrostatic testing, cleaning, cement lining, coating and inspection. The extra strength and toughness of ductile iron offers a great margin of safety against service failures due to ground movement and beam stresses; and provides vastly increased resistance to breakage caused by rough handling during transportation and installation. Qualities Long Life- inherent corrosion resis- tance assures many years of service in most soils Greater Flow Capacity -oversized inside diameter and high flow coeffi cient provide more flow than similar sized substitute pipe products Strength, Ductility and Toughness - capable of withstanding high internal pressures -heavy external loading - excellent resistance to impact and shock Easy Tapping and Field Cutting - Sharp, clean, strong threads are easily made in Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe, using standard tapping tools, even while the main is under pressure. Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe may be cut in the field with a milling type cutter or an abrasive saw and assembled with standard fittings. National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) listing under standard 61 applies to Griffin Ductile Iron Pipe. Minimum Physical Qualities: grade 60-42-10 iron tensile strength: 60,000 psi yield strength: 42,000 psi elongation: 10% High Tensile Bursting Impact Corrosion Strength Strength Strength Resistance I 2 Griffin Pipe Products Co. Standard Laying Conditions The success of a pipe product is due not only to its material composition but also to its proper design. The design must consider and respond to many adverse influences. The prima- ry design considerations for ductile iron pipe are as follows: Trench Load The consideration includes the basic static earth load, the dynamic truck load together with the force of the resulting impact upon pipe structure. To resist this influence a design ring bending stress of 48,000 psi is uti- lized. Type 1 - Flat bottom trench with loose backfill.t t"Flat-bottom" is defined as undisturbed earth. Internal Pressure Here the concern is with the intended working pressure of the pipeline together with an additional surge allowance of 100 psi. These values combine to provide the required design standard. In response to this requirement, a yield strength of 42,000 psi is utilized. Laying Conditions Once the above criteria has been determined, it is necessary to decide on how the pipeline shall be bedded and backfilled in the field. There are five standard methods, each offering its particular design value. The above is intended to provide a general understanding of the design environment of an underground pres- sure pipe product. Detailed information is available by referring to the latest AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD for the THICKNESS DESIGN of DUCTILE IRON PIPE (ANSI/AWWA C150/A21.50). Griffin Regional Product Engineers are available for consultation regarding unusual design or installation problems. Type 2 - Flat bottom trench.t Backfill lightly consolidated to centerline of pipe. 4 Griffin Pipe Products Co. Calculations are based on a 2.0 safety factor times. the sum of working pressure and 100 psi (689 kPa) surge allowance. (See ANSI/AWWA ` C150/A21.50 for design formulae.) Ductile -iron pipe for working pressures higher than 350 psi (2413 Val is avallable. a # An allowance for a single H-20 truck with 1.5 impact factor is included for all depths of cover. § Calculated maximum depth of cover exceeds 100 ft. (30.5 m). ** Minimum allowable depth cover is 3 ft.(0.9 m). tt For pipe 14 in. (350 mm) and larger, consideration should be given to the use of laying conditions other than Type 1.
