The proposed development will include the construction of two retail buildings (I0,500sq.ft. and 7,400sq.ft) with associated paved parking, subsurface utilities, and landscaping. A shared septic system is proposed to service both buildings. Refer to the accompanying Septic Plan for information on the layout and details of this system. DESIGN The proposed system was designed per The Connecticut Public Health Code's, "On -site Sewage Disposal Regulations, and Technical Standards for Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems". The DPH regulation's requires 0.1 GPD/sq.ft. for the sizing of septic tanks for retail buildings. With 17,900+ sq.ft. proposed, our estimated design flow was determined to be about 1800+ GPD. To accommodate this 24 hour flow, a central 2000 gallon septic tank is proposed. Percolation test results demonstrated a pert -rate of less than 10.1 mins/in for our proposed leaching area. Consequently, an application rate of 1.5 GPD/sq.ft ELA (per Table 8) demonstrated a required effective leaching area of 1190.2 square feet. To provide the effective leaching area, 17 - 4' x 8' x 4' H-20 rated concrete leaching galleys are proposed providing 1252 sq.ft. of effective leaching area. The chambers will be arranged in one row with two sections of 64'and 72' to provide 136ft of leaching area. The Minimum Leaching System Spread (MLSS) calculation yielded a minimum spread requirement of 96ft. The 136ft provided will more that adequately suffice for this requirement. 50 FT SETBACK FROM SEPTIC SYSTEM TO STORM INFILTRATOR SYSTEM The U.S. Geological Survey Organization published a report in November of 2010 where the effect of groundwater mounding due to the installation of infiltration structures was assessed.' The USGS developed a spreadsheet utilizing the Hantush's equation to assess site specific groundwater mounding effects. Design Professional's used this spreadsheet to assess the effects of mounding to Carleton, G.B., 2010, Simulation of groundwater mounding beneath hypothetical stormwater infiltration basins: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2010-5102, 64 p. G:\jobs\1831 \Dots\Applications\CT - SENTRAL SEPTIC APP\1831 - Septic System Narrative.docx the groundwater table beneath our proposed leaching area due to the infiltrators proposed for the site. Results have been submitted along with this narrative. Conservative values were used for soil property characteristics. The specific yield of soil was taken from the "Specific Yield -Compilation of Yields for Various Materials" published by the USGS.z Horizontal hydraulic conductivity and the recharge rate of the soil were averaged based on values published on the USDA website. The duration of stormwater infiltration was calcuiated assuming a maximum standing water height of 2.05ft which is the outlet invert elevation of the infiltrators. The initial thickness of the saturated zone was taken from test pit data. The results demonstrated that at 50ft from our proposed infiltrator location, the effects of groundwater mounding will raise the groundwater table 9.45$. Test pit results demonstrated that the high ground water table at the proposed septic leaching area is 3ft below the bottom of existing grade. At 9.45ft of groundwater mounding, the proposed leaching chambers bottom elevation will be 3.2ft above the mounded groundwater table. RESPONSE TO COMMENTS Our office has reviewed the comments by Sean Merrigan dated September 18, 2015. Responses are provided below: 1. All Design flow data, proposed building usage, test pit data, directional arrows will be provided. All submitted sets will be stamped. 2. MLSS provided. 3. Watertight specification added to cleanout and sanitary manholes 4. H-20 Rated access risers provided, watertight specification added. 5. One flat leaching row is now proposed. 6. Schedule 40 PVC (per Table 2) is proposed for all sanitary piping. 7. No foundations drains proposed 8. Ok 9. Included all items listed on checklist. 2 Johnson, A.I.
