Re: In-law apartment
Dear Ms. Caruso and Ms. Pinsonneault:
It has come to my attention that there is an in-law apartment at your
property on 5 Grace Road. A review of our files and the Building
Department files do not show any permits issued for this apartment.
Please be aware that the Town of South Windsor regulates in-law
apartments through its' Zoning Regulations. Section 7. 1.3 In-Law
Apartments outlines the criteria for applying for a permit.
In order to permit an in-law apartment, you are required to submit an
application to the Planning Department for approval. The floor plans and
elevations need to show the proposed area to be used as the in-law
apartment, as well as how you will return those rooms to living space for
the single family dwelling once the in-law apartment is no longer needed.
Copies of the relevant regulations and a permit application have been
included for your use. As a reminder, only family members may reside in
an In-law apartment.
In addition, building permits are required for any construction performed.
You will have to contact the Building Department to address the issue of
the unpermitted rooms. If you wish to utilize the finished basement area as
an in-law apartment, please complete and submit the enclosed permit
application. You can contact meat (860) 644-2511 , extension 251 if you
have any questions.
