Dear Mr. and Mrs Lavey,
Thank you for appearing before the Historic District Commission to'submit your
application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for re-roofing your house. We had a
long and fruitful discussion about your situation and would like to ask your help in
obtaining more information about the Commission's options. We are very
sympathetic to the problems associated with a slate roof and understand the
difficulty in maintaining it to control leaking.
We also feel it is our responsibility to take into consideration the unique feature of
your house as one of three identical structures in the District built for the Bissell
family. All three houses, at present, preserve the slate roofs originally designed for
them. Before making an irreversible decision to change the roofing material to
asphalt, we would like to explore further the alternative of periodic patching of the
slate. We admire the fact that for many years you have made this option your
priority.
With your consent, we would like to contact one or two consultants to advise us.
We would, of course, have them contact you before they visit your property. We
also would like to talk further with you about your concerns. The Commission has
formally denied a Certificate of Appropriateness while we seek more information.
