Very truly your, EnviroTQ:;ri Laboratory Mdryeller, DiLuzio c2: John Cullius ODOR - Good well water should be free of odor . TURBInITY - A measure of cloudiness in water , usually an indica- tor of the presence of iron. pH - (Acidity / Alkalinity. ) Acid water can corrode metal pipes . The ideal range is 7 . 00 (neutral) to 8 . 00 (alkaline) . ALKALINITY - A measure of the amount of bicarbonate in water. In- terpretation must be made in comparison with Hardness. COLOR - A quantitative measure . High color usually indicates the presence of iron or contamination. AMMONIA NITROGEN - The first breakdown product of organic matter. Levels above 0. 05 mg/l may indicate bacterial activity or contam- ination. NITRITE NITROGEN - An intermediate breakdown product of organic matter . Levels above 0. 005 mg/1 may indicate bacterial acitivity or contamination. NITRATE NITROGEN - The final completely-oxidized stage of nitro- gen. Levels above 10.0 mg/l may be harmful to infants. CHLORIDE - The non-metallic portion of common salt. Levels above 30 mg/l may indicate undesirably high sodium levels, levels above 50 mg/l may appreciably increase corrosion rates, and levels above 250 mg/l inpart a salty taste noticeable to most people. Sources of choride are principally from road salt . HARDNESS - A measure of the total calcium and magnesium in water . Waters over 100 mg/l are described as hard and levels over 250 mg/l are usually sufficiently undesirable as to warrant treat- ment . The effect of hardness is to increase the amount of soap necessary to form suds with the water . IRON - A naturally-occurring water mineral . While never harmful to health, levels above 0 . 30 mg/l may cause staining of laundry and porcelain fixtures. TOTAL COLIFORM BACTERIA - Used as an indicator of contamination . While they are not known to cause disease , it is known that they are present in large numbers in feces and soil . If present in water , it is presumed that disease-causing organisms may also be present . c0,0N sE+ t U 1540 SULLIVAN AVENUE • SOUTH WINDSOR, CONN. 06074 S CO AREA CODE 203 644-2511 29 September 1988 Mr. Richard S .
