This letter summarizes our Boston recommendations and observations related to footing subgrade preparation. Massachusetts Background Cleveland Ohio prior to our involvement, Kubachka Construction Co. encountered "clayey soil" below theDavtonYY groundwater table while excavating for footings. We understand the town building inspectorOhio had concerns about footing subgrade preparation and suitability of soils and requested that aDenvergeotechnicalengineerevaluatethesituation.Colorado Detroit We understand the proposed addition to the house will consist of a two story (both aboveMichigan existing grade) structure about 24 by 18 ft in plan dimensions. Kansas City Kansas Scope of Services T Los Angeles Califorma Our scope of services was to provide recommendations for foundation subgrade preparation,Manchester including visiting the site to observe the exposed soils, make recommendations for foundationNewHampshiresubgradepreparation, observe preparation of the footing subgrade, and prepare this letter Newark- with our recommendations and conclusions. Our scope of services did not include the floor New Jersey slab preparations. Portland Maine Site Conditions Rochester New YorA We visited the site on 25 and 26 November 2002. Upon our arrival, footingSanDiegoconsistedof3to6inchesofsoftsaturatedclayandsilt, which had been t subgrade California construction activities and groundwater. Footing subgrade had be disturbed from Tucson been overexcavated 1 to 2 ftArizona Washington nictricf OfC,1171mb.w James Alleano 27 January 2003 Page 2 below the design bottom of footings. Excavations for footings were about 4.0 to 5.5 ft below grade and up to 3.5 ft below the groundwater level. Recommendations and Observations We recommend removing soft disturbed soils and immediately placing a minimum 6-in. layer of Y4 in. size crushed stone over the geotextile filter to prevent the subgrade from disturbance and facilitate dewatering. The crushed stone under footings should be placed to limits that extend down and away from the footing at a 1:1 slope. eo serv' pr p iTion of the footing subgradc,-Flaeemnt ef-fabrie-anti crushed stone for the addition, except for 8 ft along the north wall and 5 ft along the south wall, adjacent to the existing house, which were completed after our last visit. On 25 November 2002, Kubachka Construction Co. attempted to remove the softened and disturbed soils with hand shovels. However, due to the soil's susceptibility to disturbance when wet and the difficulty they had removing the materials, these efforts further disturbed foundation subgrade. Kubachka was unable to prepare a suitable foundation bearing surface by hand and decided to obtain an excavator. On 26 November 2002, Kubachka began excavating for footings with a loader/excavator combination equipment. We recommended removal of approximately 6 in. of disturbed soil to attain a suitable foundation bearing surface. Conclusion Footing bearing surfaces were suitably prepared for the addition. We appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this project and please call if you have any questions or require additional information. Sincerely yours, HALEY& ALDRICH, INC. Kurtis E.
