Parameter MCL Goal Information
Arsenic 0.01 mg/L Arsenic occurs naturally in the environment and is a by-product of some agricultrual
and industrial activities. It can enter the drinking water through the ground or as runoff
into surface water sources.
Calcium No Limit see Hardness
Chloride 250 mg/L 250 mg/L Drinking water with chloride levels above 250mg/L may exhibit a salty taste. Elevated
(in NY/CT) sodium and chloride levels usually occur due to road salt, water softeners, natural
underground salt deposits, pollution from septic systems,or they are the result of a
well's close distance the ocean or salt ponds.
Chlorine No Limit Chlorine is used to disinfect drinking water.
Residual
Coliform 0 Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and used as an
Bacteria indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Fecal coliform and E.
coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that water may be contaminated by human
or animal wastes.Anytime the presence of Coliform is detected, the source must be
determined.
Color 15 CU 15 CU Color can be used to determine the presence of dissolved organic material or inorganic
(in NY) contaminants such as metals.
Copper 1.3 mg/L Copper enters drinking water primarily through plumbing materials. Exposure to copper
(action level) may cause health problems.
Fluoride 4.0 mg/L 2.0 mg/L Water supplies may contain some naturally occurring fluoride. Fluoride also enters
2.2 mg/L drinking water in discharge from fertilizer or aluminum factories. Also, many
(in NY) communities add fluoride to their drinking water to promote dental health. Consult your
dental professional for recommended levels.
Hardness No Limit Hardness is a measure of the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water. In
general, hardness values of less than 75 mg/L as calcium carbonate(CaCO3)
represent soft water, and values above 150 mg/L CaCO3 represent hard water.
Iron 0.3 mg/L 0.3 mg/L Iron is a naturally occurring element in groundwater and wells. While not considered a
(in NY) health hazard, iron can cause staining of laundry and fixtures, and affect the taste and
appearance of the water.
Lead 0.015 mg/L The major sources of lead in drinking water are corrosion of household plumbing
(action level) systems; and erosion of natural deposits. Lead enters the water through contact with
the plumbing. Lead leaches into water through corrosion(a dissolving or wearing away
of metal caused by a chemical reaction between water and your plumbing). Lead can
leach into water from pipes, solder, fixtures and faucets(brass), and fittings. The
amount of lead in your water also depends on the types and amounts of minerals in the
water, how long the water stays in the pipes, the amount of wear in the pipes, the
water's acidity(pH)and its temperature.
Magnesium No Limit see Hardness
Manganese 0.3 mg/L 0.05 mg/L Manganese is a trace element that occurs naturally in soil, water, and plants.
(in NY) Manganese can produce dark brown or black staining on laundry and fixtures.
Nitrate 10 mg/L Infants below six months who drink water containing nitrate in excess of the maximum
contaminant level (MCL)could become seriously ill The major sources of nitrates in
drinking water are runoff from fertilizer use; leaking from septic tanks, sewage; and
erosion of natural deposits.
Nitrite 1 mg/L Infants below six months who drink water containing nitrite in excess of the maximum
contaminant level(MCL)could become seriously ill.The major sources of nitrite in
drinking water are runoff from fertilizer use; leaching from septic tanks, sewage; and
erosion of natural deposits.

pH 6.5-8.5 pH is an indicator of the acid or alkaline condition of water. The range is 0-14,with 7
considered neutral. Below 7 is considered acidic, and above 7 is alkaline. The pH of
drinking water is not a health concern, however, acidic water(low pH)can leach metals
from plumbing systems.
Sodium 250 mg/L 28/100 mg/L Elevated sodium and chloride levels usually happen because of road salt, water
(in CT) (city I private softeners, natural underground salt deposits, pollution from septic systems, or they are
advisory level the result of a well's close distance to the ocean or salt ponds. Contact your health
in Cl) professional for recommended levels if you are on a low sodium diet.
Sulfate 250 mg/L 250 mg/L Sulfate can be found in almost all natural water. The origin of most sulfate compounds
(in NY) is the oxidation of sulfite ores, the presence of shales, or the industrial wastes. Sulfate
has a mild laxative affect.
Turbidity 5.0 NTU Turbidity has no health effects, but can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium
for microbial growth.Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of water. It is used to
indicate water quality and filtration effectiveness.
MCL Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) (Lower of):40 CFR Part 141; 40 CFR Part 143; CT Public Health
Code 19-13-B102. The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are
enforceable standards.
SEC GOAU Secondary DW Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): (Lower of): 40 CFR Part 141; 40 CFR Part
MCLGs 143; CT Public Health Code 19-13-B102. The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is
no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs are non-enforceable public health goals.
This guidance document is based on information provided by EPA National Primary and Secondary
Drinking Water Regulations, and is provided as a tool to help interpret your drinking water test
results. Contact your local health department for additional guidance and information. Additionally,
you may call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791
Additional For public water systems, chloride has a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 250 mg/L.
