HomeMy WebLinkAboutApplication Files_89666_pg0013 and its floodplam contain sands and gravel over clay. These slopes can be classified as Terrace Escarpments but are low angle and stable. On the down gradient side of the culverts(flags#104-111)a steep but short slope of fill material was noted. A few large Cottonwood trees were removed from the top of the embankment, and the remaining vegetation on the slope was dominated by Multiflora Rose. The River and its floodplain extend to the toe of the slope. WETLAND FUNCTIONS The functions and values of the wetlands will be described in a qualitative manner modeled after the method used by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The information is from The Highway Methodology Workbook Supplement. This publication uses a descriptive approach to assessing functional values, versus the CT D.E.P.approach, which uses a quantitative or numerical approach to ranking wetland fi actions and values. Ground Water Recharge/Discharge-This function considers the potential for a wetland to serve as a ground water recharge and/or discharge area. It refers to the fimdamental interaction between wetlands and aquifers, regardless of the size or importance of either. The wetlands contain both ground water discharge and recharge functions. Ground water seepage zones were noted at the base of the escarpments;however, the wetlands are underlain by deposits of sand and gravel which promote ground water recharge: Floodflow Alteration-This function considers the effectiveness of the wetland in reducing flood damage by water retention for prolonged periods following precipitation events and the gradual release of flood waters. It adds to the stability of the wetland ecological system or its buffering characteristics and provides social or economic value relative to erosion and/or flood prone areas. The wetlands are part of the Podunk River system. The wetlands are located in the lower portion of the riverine system and are associated with a floodplain. The existing breached culverts form a blockage in the system and the floodplain is very active in the area This is a primary fiznction of the wetlands. Fish and Shellfish Habitat-This function considers the effectiveness of seasonal or permanent watercourses associated with wetland in question for fish and shellfish habitat. The wetlands are associated with a perennial stream capable of supporting fin fish habitat. This is a primary function of the wetlands. 3
