From: Dean Gustafson Re: Soil Investigation and Permeability Analysis
Professional Soil Scientist Proposed CT Studios
Ellington Road and Chaplin Road
South Windsor,Connecticut
A soil investigation was performed at the proposed CT Studios project site at the southwest
intersection of Ellington Road and Chapel Road in South Windsor,Connecticut. The initial
' investigation was performed on November 11,2009 during which six(6) test pits were excavated and
described in proposed preliminary locations of stormwater management areas at the Site by a VHB
soil scientist. The purpose of the preliminary soil investigation was to determine the general
' characteristics of the sites soils, identify depth to restrictive layers and groundwater and analyze the
soil in selective depth zones for permeability to assess the soil's effectiveness for infiltrating
stormwater. To facilitate this study,a test pit plan depicting potential locations for stormwater
management systems was provided by a VHB engineer.
' Six test its TP-1 through TP-6 were excavated using a track-mounted excavator operated Sibi
p ( g ) g r pera ed by
Brancifort Construction Co.,Inc.of Cromwell,Connecticut. At each test pit,a VHB soil scientist
' recorded horizon depths,parent material,depth to a restrictive layer(e.g.,silt/clay layer,bedrock,
etc.)depth to free water and depth to seasonal high water table(SHW'I). For each soil horizon the
matrix color;texture;structure;grade;consistence;quantity and size of roots;and the quantity, size,
color and type of redoximorphic features were recorded. Appendix A contains the test pit logs. Test
pits were backfilled and smoothed to return the area to its original grade. Solid flinch PVC standpipes
were installed at the bottom of the excavation in each test pit to monitor groundwater levels.
Subsequent soil investigations were performed on December 22 and 23,2009 and January 14 and 15,
2010,and February 12,2010. A total of 11 test pits(TP-7 through TP-17)were excavated during the
' December investigations and nine(9)test pits(TP-18 through TP-26)were excavated during the
January investigations. Following a revision to the proposed subsurface infiltration system location,
an additional five(5) test pits(TP-27 through TP-31)were excavated within the limits of the infiltration
system. Test pits were first opened to depths between three and four feet with a file spade. Further.
' investigation was completed using a hand auger with 3.25-inch diameter sand auger bucket.
Monitoring wells consisting of a 5-foot section of slotted 1-inch PVC pipe and solid riser were installed
in all of the test pits, with the exceptions of TP-20 and TP-23 where groundwater was not encountered
with the depth limit of the hand auger equipment(approximately 13.5 feet)and TP-29 and TP-30 as
