Ther building is three story type 513 construction and consists of a seperated mixed use,R 2 and S-2.The S-2
occupancy is 2,170 SF on Ist floor and includes five seperate one-car garages. One Hour horizontal and vertical fire
seperation is provided between the S-2 and R-2 occupancies.
The 2012 IBC 403,3,1.2 uses the term"Occupancies"and so allows for partial AIFPA 13 sprinklering of the
building at the S-2 occupancy only,while the R-2 occupancy would be sprinklered per NFPA 13R.The 2003 IBC
903,3.1.2 uses the term "Buildings"which we are told means the entire building would be required to be sprinklered
per NFPA 13,

The S-2 portion of the building will be spriniklered per NFPA l3. The R-2 portion of the building will be
sprinklered per NFPA 13R.One hour horizontal and vertical fire separation wiI1 be provided between the two

In accordance with Section 29-296 of the Connecticut General Statutes, the decision
of the Office of the State Fire Marshal in this matter is:
This request seeks to utilize the provisions of Section
903.3.1.2 of the 2012 International Fire Code in lieu of the
provisions of Part III Section 903.3.1.2 of the 2005 CT
STATE FIRE SAFETY CODE WITH THE 2009 AND 2012
AMENDMENTS concerning the use of an NFPA 13R fire
sprinkler system in a mixed use building. Given that the
driving force behind the need for automatic fire sprinklers
is the Group R-2 occupancy, this request to utilize and '
NFPA 13R system in the Group R occupancy and a f
NFPA 13 system in the Group S-2 occupancy with the fire ;
resistive separation being provided between the �
occupancies, this request is deemed ACCEPTABLE.
