In accordance with Section 29-296 of the Connecticut General. Statutes, the decision
of the Office of the State Fire Marshal in this matter is:
This modification request which seeks relief from the requirements of Part IV, Section 31.3.6.2,
8.3.4.4 of the 2005 Connecticut State Fire Safety Code, as amended August 01, 2009 and
October 02, 2012; to permit existing non-fire resistance rated, 1-3/8 inch hollow core wood and/or
1-3/8 inch raised wood panel corridor doors to remain, from each of the effected Dwelling
(Apartment Style) Units, in this Existing Apartment Building is UNACCEPTABLE. This
decision is based on the use of an automatic fire alarm system, when conforming to the
requirements of NFPA-72 for "Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems" and automatic fire
detection installed inside the effected Dwelling Units at the entry door, and in the Corridor and in
the unoccupied Basement, along with occupant notification through out the building is not
commensurate with the intent of the code requirements for equivalent for the fire protection of 1-
3/8" hollow core wood, and/or raised wood panel doors opening into a corridor. Additionally this
so called "Corridor" is actually an Exit Stair Enclosure, that serves the effected Dwelling Units, and
additionally no practical difficulty or unnecessary hardship has been presented and the
requirements is not adjudged unwarranted.

this existing non-classified wall finish, consisting of a softwood "Barn Board"wail material applied directly

and in the unoccupied Basement, along with occupant notification through out the building is not

that the "Barn Board" wall material is applied directly over the wood studs without the use of any

number of voids (holes) exposing the wall cavity. Additionally no practical difficulty or unnecessary

In accordance with Section 29-296 of the Connecticut General Statutes, the decision
of the Office of the State Fire Marshal in this matter is:
This modification request which seeks relief to the requirements of Part IV, Section 31.3.2.1
and Table 31.3.2.1.1 of the 2005 Connecticut State Fire Safety Code, as amended August 01,
2009 and October 02, 2012; to permit the basement, which contains combustible storage
deemed a hazardous area by the South Windsor Fire Marshal, laundry area(s) exceeding 100
square feet, that is located outside of the dwelling units and a Boiler Room with fuel-fired
equipment rated in excess of 400,000 Btu per hour, or any boiler rated over 15psi to remain
unenclosed by one hour fire resistive construction or to remain unprotected by an automatic
fire sprinkler system in this Existing Apartment Building is ACCEPTABLE. This decision is
based on the existing building conditions and constraints that preclude the enclosing or
protection of the spaces in strict compliance with the code requirements and the proposed use
of a automatic fire alarm system as an alternative safeguard when conforming to the
requirements of NFPA-72 for "Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems" with automatic
detection for hazardous areas, along with occupant notification in the building.
