RE: Metals Testing Company
80 Kimberly Drive
South Windsor, Connecticut
File No. 12.038
This is in response to your request for a brief narrative regarding code compliance at this
project. This is a mixed business and industrial occupancy using hazardous chemicals. I
received a list of the chemicals, which is attached. I have requested MSDS from the owner.
Pending receipt, I have classified the industrial occupancy as H-4 based on the information
about the chemicals that I have been able to obtain online. They appear to be primarily
corrosive and toxic. Methanol is a flammable liquid, but does not cause classification as H-2
or H-3 in the quantity listed per Table 307.7(1). The employee lounge is classified as
accessory Assembly.
As an H-4 occupancy, the building is able to take advantage of the area increase for
sprinklers in 506.3. With the addition it is well within the allowable area for nonseparated
mixed use per 302.3.1, so rated separations are not required per Table 302.3.2. There is a
requirement for rated separations in 415.8, but it does not appear to apply to this plan.
The mezzanine is partially closed, and the closed portion has an occupant load of 6, well
under the 10 permitted by Exception No. 1 to 505.4. The common path of travel to the
bottom of the stairs from the most remote corner is 75 feet. Although fully sprinklered, the
Exceptions to 1013.3 are not available to H occupancies. The area of the mezzanine is 1240
square feet. It is open to a room 8500 square feet in area, so well within the limitation of
505.2. Mezzanines are permitted in H occupancies.
