RE: Review of Septic System in View of Proposed Auditorium Expansion
Dear Ms. Oatis,
I appreciate talking to you on the phone and the design documents from 1998 that you forwarded via email
to me.
In reviewing the design criteria that I had submitted in 1998,I believe the following observations are in
order:
1. The existing system was designed and built to handle the future [today] building expansion for our
complex to handle 550 people on Sunday mornings, 300 on Sunday evenings, and 250 on
Wednesday evenings. We also had a small Christian school that met daily at the facilities and
consideration was given to peak flows for church dinners, special banquets or wedding receptions,
etc.
2. At that time we proposed a system that was 4.25 times larger than necessary.
3. However our future expectations have proved somewhat optimistic. Instead of 550 we are
designing the expansion for only 350 seats giving a potential total future at this point of about 500
including Sunday School and Junior Church— 10 to 15 years from now.
4. Also we no longer have Wednesday evening church, having gone to small groups during the
midweek which largely meet in people's homes. Also we no longer have a Christian school as
more people are home schooling or sending their kids to public or other Christian schools. Also
our Sunday evening services have not grown as more people are opting for Sunday morning and
Wednesday evening small group meetings.
5. The original design in 1998 called for Total Maximum One Day Flows of 2600gpd and Average
Daily Flows of 540 gallons/day [calculated for optimistic future growth].
The current future projections would be the same as the past future projections. Our current attendance is
about 250 on Sunday mornings, which is actually about the same as it was in 1998. However, we used to
have two Sunday morning services but have chosen to go back to one for various reasons which
necessitates expanding our auditorium by about 50%.
We have continued our maintenance of the system by having both tanks pumped every two years to avoid
solids build up which would effectively reduce the tank sizes.
When we built the new field lines and connected the two field systems together as shown in the drawing
that you sent to me,we found that after 10 years of use including dosing by pumping at 75 gpm the
effluent had never reached that far into the field line. Dust was still on the rocks and pipe from the
construction in 1988. This indicates that the system is well oversized to handle any future foreseeable
growth.
Thank you,
