Investigation and Remarks:
4/6/'17: Message left for H.O. on VM concerning a person who's doctor confirmed that "he is ill".
Please call back.
4/7/'17: H.O. call back. Caller stated that he went to the Classic Nails and Spa on 4/4/17. He
requested a pedicure. They ran the water for him at a foot bath chair and it was too hot for him to
put his feet in. Once the water was cool enough, the technician pulled out a "dirty/used tool kit" and
the chair was noticeably dirty. The file that they used on his feet/nails had debris from previous
customer still on the file bed. When the customer next to him was done with her pedicure, they just
rinsed out the foot bath and did not wash or sanitize in any way. They vigorously massaged his feet
and cut his toe nails. A few hours later, the top of his right foot became very itchy. When he pulled
off his shoe and sock, the top of his right foot was covered in bumps and puss came out when he
itched it. He visited his doctor on 4/5/17 and was put on a 5-day round of"double antibiotics". His
left foot also started to itch the following day, but didn't get as bad since he was already on the
antibiotics. He requested an investigation be made to prevent other patrons from having a similar
painful problem.
4/7/7 10:15am: Site investigation. DLC spoke with manager, Myung "Susan" Lee and asked about
sanitary practices in the salon. 2 foot baths not in use at time of inspection jet covers removed and
no dirt or debris was observed. Observed a foot bath that was recently vacated by a client and the
worker was rinsing with water only in the spa. Inspected 4 more chairs and swabbed with alcohol
wipes, wipes heavy black and orange buildup on cover and inside jets before guard. Also hair and
nail clippings observed. Myung stated that in the winter the chairs and footbaths are disinfected
once a week and in the summer, they are cleaned more often. OPI disinfectant was available in the
salon, DLC stated that the chairs are to be disinfected at least every night. E PA handout in Korean
given at time of inspection to ensure proper education. Inspection of working desks for nails
inspected, 50+ files and buffers discarded due to debris buildup and observable wear on tools.
Cuticle Tool discarded with heavy rusting. Reviewed sanitary file procedure (disinfect or discard
after each client).
Myung also stated that they mix fabuloso and Formula 409 to clean the foot baths and keep odor
away. It was suggested that they use Lysol or C hlorox wipes in between customers in the foot
basins and also remove covers and wipe inside jet units. They use UV lights to disinfect multi tools
and then place them in barbicide for 5 minutes before using on clients. Letter sent to owner
concerning visit and sanitary practices. Reinspection to be performed on or a little after 4/14/17.
4/92017 2pm: Compliance investigation. Myung away in NJ. Nail Tech in charge and I performed a
walk through of the facility. There are now pre made, hospital grade sanitizer bottles (Glitz) at each
foot bath station. Checked drain covers and jets, no buildup or mold observed. PIC stated that now
all baths are wiped down between customers, covers removed, and at the end of the nigh the baths
are sanitized by running jets and OP solution. Nail tech stations inspected, and nail files/buffers are
now cleaned and sanitized (resusables) between customers. Separate drawers are used for clean
and dirty files at each station. Multiuse items are soaked in barbicide for approximately 2-4 minutes
between customers.
Compliance letter sent.
