Prelimina:ty results of laboratory analysis of well water samples, taken last week,/
have indicated that the wells in the area are not polluted and there is no danger
to the residents of South Windsor at this time.
The well water samples and surface water sample have shown negative results for
indicators of industrial waste pollution. Several samples, however, contained.
trace amounts of toluene, a hydrocarbon which is sometimes found in ground water
supplies. The amounts detected were .less than two parts per billion, and
because of the very low-level, could not be measured accurately. The minute
quantities detected were far below the Environmental Protection Agency`s
suggested harmful effect level.
There is no reason to believe, based upon the preliminary results, that any
hazard to the water supplies in the test area exist.
According to the Department of Environmental Protection investigations as to
the extent of soil and ground water contamination, if indeed any exists, will
be conducted at the site. If deemed necessary from results of this testing
or other indicators, additional water sampling will be conducted in the area.
At least one set of follow-up samples will be taken as an additional
precautionary measure.
