We have been consulting with the State Health Department, Environmental Epidemiology Division concerning this matter and it was determined that spraying was not warranted at this time. Unfortunately, spraying will nor prevent the spread of this naturally occuring environmental issue as can be attested to by the aerial spraying which occured in New York when West Nile first appeared there, several years ago. The most effective measures to avoid exposure, as I'm sure you are aware, are to limit time outside when mosquitos are most active(dawn and dusk),wear protective clothing. and use repellent containing DEET. This morning on my way out to work there was a dead black bird/crow on the steps leading to the back yard. Does your office pick them up for testing? (West Nile/Encephalitis) Since I was running late, I didn't stop to bag it-just left it there. I called my husband to see if he saw it when he left for work(5:30am), he had not seen it there. Since he always leaves by the back door he would have seen it on his way out if it was there then. So it must have died there between 5:30 and 6:30. The five infected birds were crows found between May 30— July 10 in the following Connecticut towns: Columbia, Somers, Southington, Wallingford, and Westbrook. In 2003, 33 states including four(4)with human cases have reported confirmed WNV to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of July 21, 2003,40 wild birds have been submitted to the State Mosquito Management Program. Testing has been completed on 31 birds and results are pending on eight(8)birds (one was not suitable for testing). Surveillance for WNV-infected birds began on June 2, 2003, and is coordinated by the Department of Public Health(DPH). Birds submitted by local health departments are evaluated by the Department of Environmental Protection(DEP),transported to the University of Connecticut Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science(UCONN) for further examination, and testing is completed at the DPH State Public Health Laboratory. "Finding crows with West Nile virus is a reminder that there are infected mosquitoes that also can transmit this disease to people," said Norma Gyle, R.N.,Ph.D.,Acting DPH Commissioner. "Residents, particularly the elderly, should avoid mosquito bites at anytime during the mosquito season especially in areas where West Nile virus is identified." Persons older than 60 years of age are more likely than younger persons to suffer severe health consequences if they become infected with WNV. During 2002, 17 persons were confirmed with WNV infection including residents of 10 towns in Fairfield, Hartford, and New Haven counties. Ten persons were hospitalized. Onset of illness occurred from the first week of August to the first week of October. All of the patients recovered. Overall the age of the patients ranged from 24-81 years. The median age of hospitalized cases was 62 years compared to 44 years for individuals treated on an outpatient basis. DPH Press Release July 21, 2003 Page two of three Infected wild birds, especially crows, are a sensitive initial indicator of the presence of WNV in the northeastern United States. The wild bird surveillance program emphasizes reporting and testing of dead adult crows and birds related to crows, including blue jays and ravens, and raptors such as hawks. During 2002, 501 crows and 27 wild birds of 8 other species tested positive for WNV. The positive birds were found in 100 different towns in all eight counties between May 20th and October 23rd. The State is asking the public to report sightings of dead birds to their local health departments throughout the summer and fall. Local health departments log each call, including the date, species, and location of the sighting and then report that information to the DPH on a weekly basis. The DPH coordinates the collection of information on bird mortality, which includes reports of dead bird sightings and their testing for WNV. Reports of dead birds will be updated on the State Mosquito Management website(accessed via the DPH and DEP websites)within 24 hours of new test results. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station(CAES)has established a network of 91 mosquito-trapping stations in 72 municipalities throughout the state. Mosquito traps are set by the CAES every ten days at each site on a rotating basis. Supplemental trapping is also conducted in response to detection of WNV in humans, horses, and birds during the course of the season. Mosquitoes are grouped(pooled)for testing according to species, collection site, and date. To date all mosquitoes have tested negative for WNV. The State of Connecticut Mosquito Management Program is an interagency program consisting of the Department of Environmental Protection, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the Department of Public Health, the Department of Agriculture, and the University of Connecticut Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science. Precautions to avoid mosquito bites include: • Minimize time outdoors at dusk and dawn • Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good repair • Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts. Clothing material should be tightly woven • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors • Consider using mosquito repellent when it is necessary to be outdoors and always use them according to label instructions • When using DEET(the most widely used insect repellent)on children, use a product containing less than 10%DEET and wash treated skin after returning indoors DPH Press Release July 21, 2003 Page three of three Measures to reduce mosquitoes around the home include: • Dispose of water-holding containers, such as ceramic pots, used tires, tire swings • Drill holes in the bottom of containers such as those used for recycling • Clean clogged roof gutters • Turn over objects that may trap water when not in use such as wading pools and wheelbarrows • Change water in bird baths on a weekly basis • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, and when not in use, pool covers • Use landscaping to eliminate areas where water can collect on your property.
