A 7though the water supply has sodium remova 7 equ meet insta 77ed the lab
report (Phoenix Environmental Laboratories Inc.f dated June 15, 1993
indicates a sodium concentration of 71 milligrams per liter. This level
exceeds the State Health Department guideline of 28 mg/L.
It is recommended that any users of this water supp 7y who are on a sodium
restricted diet notify their physicians of the sodium content.
Very tru 7y yours,

STANDARD WATER TEST FOR PRIVATE WELLS
Maximum Contaminant Level: Test results must be less than the "Maximum Contaminant Level"
for a potable supply. Water should not be used particularly for drinking, cooking for
ingestion if the "Maximum Contaminant Level" is exceeded.
Advisory Limits-: Results greater than the "Advisory Limits" may impose aesthetic or physical
qualities that make the water undesirable for use.
1. pH: Acceptable Range - 6.4 - 8.5 pH units.
2. Hardness: Advisory Limit - 200 mg/L (as CACO3). When determining the corrosiveness
of scale-forming properties of well water, the pH and hardness are taken into consideration.
If well water falls within the limits given in #1 - 2 above, there is usually no need for
treatment.
3. Chloride: Maximum Contaminant Level - 250 mg/L.
4. sodium : Advisory limits Sodium 28.0 mg/L Sodium is frequently combined with.chloride
in water as salt. Well water near the ocean may have high salt levels. The salting of roads,
storage of salt, and water that has been softened will cause water to have high sodium levels.
5. Color: Advisory Limit is 15 PCU. ( see iron and manganese)
6. odor: Advisory Limit is 2_
Most organic and some inorganic chemicals contribute to odor. They may originate from natural
sources ( decomposition of vegetable matter), or from associated microbial activity. The most
common odor in well water is from vegetable_ matter decomposition. The.smell resembles rotten
eggs and -is usually from 'hydrogen sulfide._ Ari'activated<carbon filter will `normally .elim nate
these odors.
7. Turbidity: Advisory Limit is 5 NTU ( See iron and manganese) .
8. & 9. Nitrite and Nitrate: Maximum Contaminant Level Limits -1.0 mg/L Nitrite and 10 mg/L
Nitrate plus Nitrite. Nitrates get into well water from sewage disposal and from
fertilizer. The best form of control is removal of the source.
10. Copper: Advisory Limit - 1.0 mg/L.
Copper effects taste and the staining of porcelain.
ll.& 12. Iron and Manganese: Advisory Limits are: Iron 0.3 mg/L and Manganese 0.05 mg/L.
High iron and manganese levels may be caused by rusty pipes, water storage tanks, or pumps.
High levels will cause the turbidity and color levels to rise above the recommended levels.
In some cases, new wells will be turbid and orange in color. This is usually temporary and
will dissipate upon continuous usage of the water. In some areas, high iron levels are
naturally occurring and some type of treatment may be required.
13. Coliform Organisms: Maximum Contaminant Level 0/100 ml.
The presence of harmful bacteria discharged in the waste excretions of humans and animals is
indicated by the lab test for coliform organisms. Their presence is evidence that the water
may have been contaminated by sewage discharge and may contain dangerous disease-producing
organisms. Whenever a well is contaminated by coliform organisms, the cause must be located
and corrected.
