Dear Mr. &Mrs. McAlees:
As you are aware, the Town of South Windsor is under an administrative order issued by the Department of
Environmental Protection to provide potable water to those residents whose wells are impacted or threatened
by contaminants, with a long term potable water supply.
You have recently received correspondence from the DEP regarding the results of your most recent water
analysis. Based on contaminant concentration in your well water you are eligible to receive reimbursement
of 60.8%of the cost of connecting to the available public water and abandoning your well.
In order to receive reimbursement, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary contractors (excavation,
plumbing, licensed well driller, etc.) for connecting your residence to public water and abandoning your well.
The well abandonment must be performed by a registered, licensed well driller in accordance with the
Department of Consumer Protections' Well Drilling Board Rules and Regulations. In addition, you are
responsible for making all arrangements with the Connecticut Water Company. All expenses will initially
be paid by you. You will then submit copies of all paid bills to the Town. The Town will then forward
these to the DEP. If approved by the DEP, they will then forward 60.8% of your costs to the Town. The
Town will then forward this payment to you. Please remember that you will not receive any reimbursement
for connecting to the water if you do not also abandon your well.
You are advised to obtain three quotes for doing the work and submitting them along with your paid bills.
This is to ensure to the DEP that the reimbursement request is reasonable and that the costs are not
exorbitant. The DEP may not reimburse for costs they feel are excessively high.
Please complete the enclosed form and return it in the envelope provided within forty five (45) days of
receipt of this letter. Failure to respond within the specified time frame will mean that you do not intend to
connect to the public water.
If you decide not to connect to the public water at this time and contaminants are still detected in your
water at a future date, you will not received bottled water and there may not be any State money available
for reimbursement should you decide to connect.

If you decide not to connect to public water, the Town will still monitor your well on a yearly basis if you so
desire.
If you decide not to connect to the public water, you may still install a granular activated carbon filter
system for the contaminant removal. However, this installation will be at your own expense. There will be
no reimbursement for it. Enclosed is information regarding the filter system, it you are interested.
If you have any questions please call me at 644-2511 ext.248.
Thank you
