Midlin 349 Griffin Road South Windsor, CT 06074 Dear Mr. Midlin: Unfortunately, as determined by Mr. Stead from the firm of Peterson & Hoffman, the finished floor elevation of your residential dwelling located on Route 5 in South Windsor is approximately seven feet lower than indicated on your plan, which was approved in August of 1979. Because of this, it is impossible to keep the flow line of the leading trenches at the approved elevations utilizing gravity flow and be in compliance with the State Public Health Code. At this point, you may either utilize the same septic system design, with the 'addition of a pumping chamber to raise the effluent to the proper elevation, or try to find an area to relocate your system. The new area may also have to be pumped. In either case, a revised engineered plan must be submitted for approval. If a pump is utilized, manufacturer and model number must be indicated and size of pump chamber must be shown. If a new area is to be used, additional observation pits must be dug in the presence of the Town Sanitarian to find a suitable area. If you have any questions on the aforementioned, please do not hesitate to call me at Town Hall, 644-2511, Extension 42. Very truly yours, TOWN OF SOUTH WINDSOR Robert Deptula, R.S. Town Sanitarian RD:bw cc: Inland-Wetlands Commission Donald McLaughlin, Building Inspector CERTIFIED MAIL: #461455 STATE OF CONNECTICUT v DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES BUREAU OF HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION July 9, 1980 Mr. Robert Deptula, R.S. Town Hall South Windsor, CT 06074 Dear Mr.. Deptula: This letter is to confirm our conversation regarding subsurface sewage disposal for the residence presently under construction on the property of John Midlin, Route 5, South Windsor, on the occasion of our inspection of the property on July 1 , 1980. The house is presently under construction, but has been moved from the location indicated on the original plan approved by this office. The house sewer eleva- tions have been set too low, so that it is not possible to construct the leach- ing system in fill in :the area originally proposed. As you know, most of this property is underlain by an - impervious clay layer at a relatively shallow depth. One possible way of constructing a gravity sewage disposal system would be to locate the leaching system on the slope of a shallow ravine north of the build- ing. Two observation pits were dug in this area. The upper hole showed a depth of about 3 feet of sandy loam, underlain by clay. The lower hole showed a depth of about 12 feet of medium loam underlain by a sandy clay. No ground water was apparent, and it appeared that a leaching system constructed in the area of these test holes would allow for gravity flow, and still be located at least 50 feet from the watercourse at the bottom of the ravine. The following recommendations were made for design of the system: 1 . 300 feet of 3-foot wide leaching trench should be used. These. trenches would have to be in two rows along the hillside in order to allow for gravity flow and be sufficiently far from the watercourse. Four 75-foot long trenches could be used, extending in both directions from central distribution boxes. 2. The invert of the upper trench should be located approximately at existing grade, while the invert of the lower trench should be approximately 12 inches above existing grade. This would require about 1. foot of fill at the upper trench, and 2 feet at -the lower trench. The fill should be extended for a distance of 25 feet beyond the lower trench to assure that sewage effluent does .not surface. A serial distribution arrangement is recommended. 3. Before revised plans are prepared or the system is installed, it will be necessary to run a profile of the existing sewer, septic tank and the ground contours in the area of the proposed leaching trenches. The location and elevation of the system should be carefully staked to assure proper construc- tion. A revised plan, or as-built plan should be submitted.
