Re:Unity Church(Formerly River Valley Baptist Church site)
Dear Bob
We have resubmitted the change order plans for the above referenced site. As part of the revised change
order plans,we have included a design plan for the septic system.
The projected flows for the septic system were determined from information provided to us by the architect.
The projected flows are as follows:
1. Sanctuary Seating total=288 (222 main level, 21 for choir, and 45 in balcony on second level)
Flow of 1 gpd.(gallon per day)per seat=288 gallons. "'
2. Fellowship hall capacity of 115 @ 5gpd per person.=575 gallons.
3. Office assume 4 people @ 20 gpd. =80 gallons.
4. Sunday school 72 occupancy @ 2 gpd. = 144 gallons.✓
The peak flow will occur on a Sunday, with very little activity during the remainder of the week. In order
to determine a design flow for the facility,we looked at a very busy three day period of Friday through
Sunday. Assuming that the fellowship hall would be used both days,we calculated the following flows:
Event Friday Saturday Sunday
Sanctuary - - 288 gals.
Fellowship Hall 575 gals. 575 gals. 575 gals.
Office 80 gals. 80 gals. 80 gals.
Sunday School - - 144 gals.
Total 655 gals. 655 gals. 1,087 gals.
Average over 3 days=799 gallons. el R.
Jc« ; 'i
The 64' of 4x4 infiltraters-will have a volume capacity of 7,659 Gallons. Therefore, the infiltrators will be
able to handle holding the higher Sunday flow and distribute over the longer period. During the remainder
of the week, the flows are expected to be very low with essentially only the office in operation.
We have sized the septic tank and grease trap at 1250 gallons to cover the largest single day. We are not
aware of the intent to operate a day care facility of any type at the site. With the size of the system, and the
averaging out of flows over a week time period, a small facility of 30 or so kids should not make any
difference in the septic design. A larger all day facility may have an impact, and the projected flows would
need to be checked prior to allowing the facility to operate.
Please review the enclosed, and call with any questions or comments, or if you need additional information.
Sincerely,
Galen Semprebon, P.E.

DPI Project No. 1452
April 8,2003
Maintenance and Operation: The following maintenance operations will be required to
ensure the proper and efficient operation of the Storm Water System, and
Detention/Water Quality Basin. The following maintenance schedule is intended to be a
minimum guide, and additional inspections and maintenance measures may be required
following large storm events that could cause the deposition of excess debris in the
system.
Catch Basins: The catch Basins shall be inspected annually. The sumps shall be
cleaned when the depth of material within the sumps reaches 1'.
Basin Spillway: The stone overflow trench shall be inspected twice yearly. All
large woody growth that may affect the flow of water or the stability of the trench
shall be removed. The spillway shall also be inspected after any flow passes
through it. The stone shall be re-arranged and added to as required to maintain
the design as per the design plans.
Pavement: The pavement surfaces shall be swept a minimum of once per year,
shortly after the end of the snow season.
Introduction: The site was originally designed with a series of catch basins draining to
drywells (See Storm Water Management Report dated 4/14/98 prepared for River Valley
Baptist Church). We recently proposed to replace this design with a surface detention
basin that would discharge through a level spreader at a peak rate less than existing. Due
to concerns with proposing a level spreader, and discharge location in close proximity to
the Lakewood Condominiums, we have revised the basic drainage design concept.
Original Design: The original design consisted of a total of 20 circular drywell
structures. The structures were designed at 6' depth, 8' diameter, with 2' of stone around
each structure. The drywells provided the majority of the storage volume and the
infiltration. The total volume of storage of the 20 drywells would be 7,330 C.F. There
was an additional 3,400 C.F. +-of surface storage volume in the area adjacent to the
parking in the southwest corner of the site. Therefore, the total storage for surface runoff
on the site would be 10,730 C.F. The drywells provided a surface area for infiltration
(surface area of outside face of stone on drywells) of 4,524 S.F.total.
Revised Drainage Design Concept: The proposed drainage design will consist of
providing the same infiltration area as the original design, (4,524 S.F.)using infiltration
trenches in place of the drywells. The volume originally provided(10,730 C.F.)will be
provided by surface basins in place of the drywell structures.
The infiltration area will be provided by infiltration trenches consisting of 3' wide, 5'
deep trenches with a 6"perforated pipe within each trench. Assuming infiltration will
occur from each side of the trench, and not using the bottom area for infiltration, we will
have 10 S.F. per linear foot of trench for infiltration. We need to provide a minimum of
4,524 S.F. of infiltration. Therefore, we will need to provide a minimum of 452.4 L.F. of
trench for infiltration.
Assuming a porosity of 0.3 for the stone, the infiltration trench will have a volume
capacity of 5 C.F. per linear foot of trench. (pipe capacity plus surrounding stone). 452.4
Linear feet of trench would have a capacity of 2,262 C.F. Therefore, a minimum of
8,468 C.F. (10,730 C.F. 2,262 C.F. = 8,468 C.F.)would be required on the surface.
Based on the proposed design,we are proposing approximately 35,000 C.F. of surface
storage on the site. This is over 3 times the amount of stormwater storage on site
originally proposed.
Conclusions: The proposed design is more conservative than the original design in that
it provides subsurface infiltration as per the original design, and provides over 3 times the
stormwater storage capacity of the original design. During non frozen conditions, there
will be a significant amount of surface infiltration from the basins.
