Septic System Design LOTruth Baptist ChurclL 60 Burnham Street,SW 7/23/98 Page 1 Septic System Design For The Proposed Addition Building Usage: The proposed building will be used in conjunction with the existing church building for additional Sunday School classroom space, youth activities on the evenings of the regular church meetings, a small Christian Day School(currently 7 students with 15 max.)and other functions as necessary. Our doctrine and policies require that the building only be used in a manner conforming to the purpose of the church--reaching people with the gospel of Jesus Christ, then teaching them to observe that which He has commanded in the Bible. This prohibits the rental of the building for money making ventures, holding carnivals, having raffles, suppers for financial gain, etc. The kitchen facilities will not be used for cooking of banquets, weddings, etc but only for warming and preparing already cooked and catered food. Our fellowship dinners are cooked at home by the people and brought to the church. In summary, this building is simply an addition to the existing building and will be connected by a hallway type connector. The restroom facilities will be accessible to people in both buildings. During Sunday school and church, people will move from the new building to the existing building and vise versa to find the appropriate meeting places and therefore will use the restroom facilities in the most convenient location in either building. A future expansion of the existing building is planned that will enable accommodation of approximately 400 to 450 people with both buildings in use on Sunday. Proposed Design Philosophy: Since the buildings will be used integrally and not separately, the design proposed is one that looks at both buildings as one and designs the septic system for the peak flow when both buildings are being used together at peak times. Design Flow Calculation: For estimating purposes, a proposed design occupancy of these facilities of 550 is being used. This allows for any unexpected and unforeseen growth. This is an outside maximum number. The actual real number looking at church growth through the 18 year history of the church would extrapolate to a maximum of about 350 people within 15 years assuming ideal conditions. The future expanded auditorium of the church will have a legal seating capacity of about 350. Experience has shown that about 30%of the total attendance is children and children's workers who would be meeting in the proposed building for"junior church"while the adult service is taking place. Thus the total maximum number of people in an expanded setting would be 350/0.7=500 persons. If a safety factor of 10%is included, the total design occupancy of the complete facility would be 550 persons as a peak for 2 hours maximum on Sunday morning. According to the CT Public Health Code page 25 church flows should be estimated as follows for the maximum 1 day flows. Church 550 p x 1 g/p/d= 550 gpd Sunday School 200 p x 2 g/p/d= 400 gpd "` ► „o 0 ,••••. . "soP;al Septic System Design Truth Baptist Church 60 Burnham Street,SW 7/23/98 Page 2 Calculate the tank size using the Peak Flow Method Peak 2 hour flow would be 1650 g during a large fellowship if 100%of the flow was generated in the new building--a very conservative assumption since restroom facilities in both buildings would be in use. The maximum occupancy for the new building for a dinner fellowship calculated at 15 sf/person as required by CT State Fire Safety Code and the CT State Building Code would be: 55x90/15 =330 persons. Using 330 persons as the maximum event population, a peak 2 hour flow would be 1650 g requiring a 1650 g tank. Proposed Tank Size: It is proposed to provide a 2000 gallon tank for the new building. Since the existing building has a 1500 gallon tank, the total capacity provided will be 3500 gallons--well in excess of that necessary under ideal growth future conditions 15 to 20 years away. Leach Field Size: The subsoil is uniformly graded fine sand with a depth greater than 15 feet. The perk rate is 1 inch per minute as tested by the South Windsor Sanitarian before construction of the existing septic system in 1988. The site is almost level and the soils are the same over the entire site. The water table is fairly uniform approximately Elevation 740 which is about 14 feet below the average ground level. The new leach field will be construction near the existing field as shown on the plot plan. Using the one day per month peak flow rate of 2600 gal per day with a perk rate of 1 inch/minute,the total length of new leach field lines would be calculated using 1.5 gallons/day/sf of leach field area(see page 41 of the CT Regulations and Technical Standards.) Thus the total square feet of area is 2600/1.5=1733sf. At 3ft of trench width per linear foot of trench, the total trench length necessary for both buildings is 578 feet. However, the actual average daily flows into the system are much less for a church as shown by the calculations in the"Endnote"at the end of this paper. The average daily flow rate over the month would be 540 gallons per day. This would require a leach field of 540/1.5/3=120 linear feet at 3 feet trench width or 360 sf. The existing leach field contains 3 segments 75 feet in length with a 30 foot end section for a total of 255 linear feet or 765 sf. We are proposing to install another leach field with 3 branches 75 feet long connected by a 30 foot segment giving a total of 255 linear feet of new trench. Thus the total proposed leach field capacity will be 255 x 2=510 linear feet or 1530 sf. Although this is slightly less than the 1733 sf required if the field were sized for the one day a month peak flow, it is more than adequate to handle normal daily flows. From a practical standpoint, the combined leach field system would be over 4 times as large(1530/360=4.25)as would be necessary to handle the average daily flows. The Existing System: The existing system has gravity flow of raw sewage into the existing 1500 g septic — tank from the existing building. The final effluent of the septic tank is then pumped up into a gravity line " flowing to the distribution box. The final effluent pump station consists of 2 industrial quality submersible sewage pumps capable of pumping about 75 gpm which provides excellent dosing of the field system. The Septic System Design Truth Baptist Church 60 Burnham Street,SW 7/23/98 Page 3 pumps are controlled by floats that operate as follows: All floats down-- all pumps turn off. First float up-- no pump action(when down this float turns both pumps off, when up, enables pumps to start when next float calls. Two floats up-- first pump turns on(the pumps are alternated after each cycle) Three floats up-- both pumps are on and alarm on also(this condition would only occur if the first pump had failed since the pumps are much faster than the fastest possible influx of raw sewage) Four floats up— high water alarm sounds inside existing building. This system was install with industrial quality materials and has been operating with no problems for 10 years. The controls and switches are located in the garage near the septic tank enabling the controls to remain dry. The Proposed System: The following system is proposed in this plan. 1. Install a new 255 linear foot leach field and connect it to the existing 255 linear foot field. 2. Install a new 2000 gallon septic tank to service the flows from the new building. 3. Direct the effluent of both septic tanks into the existing pump station a. Alternate pumps each cycle b. Alternate leach fields each cycle--in effect dosing one field while the other is recuperating 4. Install a new gravity line from the existing pump station to the proposed leach field and distribution box. Reasons Why This Proposal is the Best Alternative to Expanding the System: 1. This proposal enables dosing of both fields since the pumps would be the feeding source for both fields(see page 29 of CT Public Health Code Regulations and Technical Standards.) The existing field is working perfectly and should continue to gives many more years of services based on our past experience and the experience of neighbors in the area. a. If the effluent from the proposed septic tank were routed directly into the proposed leach field, dosing would not be accomplished. Failing to dose would result in much more erratic distribution to the various field lines for reasons explained in the CT Public Health Department booklet entitled"Design of Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems for Households and Small Commercial Buildings, 5/88,pages 35,36.) 2. This proposal ensures that both field systems will be used equally, eliminating the possibility that one would be used much more than the other resulting in plugging of the over used field system. a. This is a real concern since both buildings are used together as if they are one building. It is a possibility that the new building restrooms will be used much more than those in the existing building since the restrooms of the existing building are in the basement and require stairs. It is also planned to have kitchen facilities in the new as well as the old building. If the sewage from each building is directed into its own dedicated leach field, there is a strong possibility that one field will be overused and the other under used. 3. This proposal better utilizes the provided equipment. If an additional pump station were to be required, this would provide too much capacity and result in under use of each pump. According to the pump manufacturer's instructions, pumps work better, last longer and are more reliable if they - - - are used regularly and for long-enough periods to warm up the motor windings and bearings. a. One difficulty of church type effluents is that the pumps run a few times on the week end and then are used little for the rest of the week. If another pump station were required by the Town, each pump would be used less than they are currently being used which would result in a less reliable and far more complex waste disposal system. Septic System Design Truth Baptist Church 60 Burnham Street,SW 7/23/98 Page 4 Proposed System Maintenance: Currently the existing septic tank is pumped each year in July and inspected. The pumping station is also pumped dry and the pumps and dry well are hosed down and inspected. This type of maintenance will be performed on the total system in the future. As such, the proposed septic system should last for many years. Overview: Since there are no sewers available and there is no prospect of any in the foreseeable future, septic treatment of the wastes at this site is essential. However, the proposed installation is as ideal a situation as possible from the standpoint of longevity. 1. The subsoil is well drained, far above groundwater, and nearly level. 2. Two leach fields will be equally used and are sized 4.25 times larger than necessary to accommodate the average daily flows that can be expected in the next 15 to 20 years. 3. Both fields will be dosed at the rate of approximately 75 gallons per minute enabling the entire field to be used and not just the first few feet of each field line. 4. The entire system is being sized to permit a future expansion of the existing church auditorium without having to increase or modify the waste treatment system. By sizing for future flows, this proposal is very conservative in nature. Endnote: The maximum average daily flows that could be expected in the next 15 to 20 years are as follows: Weekly Sunday morning 550x1=550 Sunday School 200x2=400 Sunday Evening 300x1=300 Wednesday Evening 250xl=250 Total Weekly Flows: 1500 gallons/week= 215 gallons/day Daily--Monday thru Friday School(Current enrollment is 7 pupils) 15xl5=225 Teachers 3x25=75 Employees 3x25=75 Total DailyFlows(Monday-Friday) 375 x5/7= 270 gallons/day Monthly Church Fellowship 1650 gallons/month= 55 gallons/day Average Daily Flows (15 to 20 years hence) = 540 gallons/day a STATE OF CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH r11Ails? r August 17, 1998 Robert Deptula, R.S. South Windsor Health Department Town Hall 1540 Sullivan Avenue South Windsor, CT 06074 RE: Proposed Subsurface Sewage Disposal System Enlargement Truth Baptist Church, 60 Burnham Street, South Windsor Qo0 Dear 6 tula: We are in receipt of a fact sheet and design plans for a proposed enlargement of the subsurface sewage disposal system at the Truth Baptist Church, 60 Burnham Street in South Windsor. The information was provided by Bim L. Rowley,Professional Engineer. The four(4)page fact sheet has a preparation date of July 23, 1998;the plan drawings have a revision date of July 15, 1998. The purpose of the submittal to this office was to ascertain the appropriate design flow for the sewage disposal system so that jurisdiction can be assigned. Judging from the fact sheet the anticipated flows from this religious complex is typical for this type of use. Peak flows will occur on Sundays during church services and Sunday school activities. Occasionally there will be social or fellowship meetings which would generate waste flows which are over and above normal daily usages. According to our"Design Manual"weekly averages can be utilized for the sizing of this type of leaching system as long as the"peak"daily flows are addressed when sizing septic tanks and leaching system storage capacities. In this case,we have concluded that a daily design rate of 720 gallons per day_(GPD)would be appropriate for design purposes, with a"peak"flow rate of 2,600 GPD utilized for septic tank and storage calculations. Since the daily design rate is below 2,000 GPD the jurisdiction for review of this plan can remain at the South Windsor Health Department. With regards to the design philosophy stated in the fact sheet,we are concerned that the dual pump cycle-dual leaching system application proposal could lead to only 1/2 system usage whenever one of the pumps malfunctions. We would prefer that the dual pumps discharge into a splitter box which would then distribute the total flow from each pump cycle equally into each half of the system. Without such an arrangement,we would recommend that the two systems be "tied"together by end connections, since the two systems will be at the same elevation.
