Re: Managing the Strawbridge Condominium Complex Property as a self sustaining,
environmentally sound, model for residential community development
Dear Mr. Gantick:
We are contacting you in the hopes that you will be able to assist us with your expertise
and resources.
For the past few months, the Board of Directors at Strawbridge has been in discussions
with Ruth Cutler, from the University of Connecticut College of Agriculture and Natural
Resources and Windam County Extension Center, about managing our 62 acre property.
This property abuts the Podunk River and Town Conservation Area. The property
consists of developed`condominium housing and associated paved areas, common
landscaped areas, and undeveloped woodland and field areas. Ruth was and remains
excited about the uniqueness of our property and the positive environmental impact that
we can have if our property is managed properly.
We are in a unique position to initiate changes at this time. We have Ruth's expertise to
guide us. We have a board that recognizes the value of the resources of our property and
the abutting waterfront. We are in a cycle at Strawbridge where much of the existing
landscaping needs to be updated and reassessed. We are in the process of contacting the
Conway School of Landscape Design and the University of Connecticut to get bids on
developing a plan to achieve our landscape design and landscape management goals at
Strawbridge, with the focus on landscaping that is self sustaining, with environmental
harmony and preservation of our woodlands.
We would like to start to control invasive species like bittersweet, burning bush and the
Common Reed Phragmites. We would like to control the runoff from our property that is
draining into the Podunk River. We would like to redesign our trail system to have less
impact on wildlife and yet encourage our residents to enjoy the pond area and appreciate
the natural beauty of our woodlands:
It is rare to find such a natural watershed area in an increasingly urbanized area. We look
forward to discussions with you about working together with the Town of South Windsor
in our efforts to preserve this area.
I can be emailed at mborghesi@cox.net or reached by mail at the above address.
Sincerely,
Maxine Borg si ,
