Recently we conducted a study of motor vehicle traffic accidents
on Route 5 in the vicinity of Mascolo Road in the Town of South Wind-
sor . During that investigation, we discovered an undesirable condi-
tion which was not involved with the accidents being studied .
Our field investigator observed that trailer trucks entering Mas-
colo Roach from Route 5 southbound were unable to enter without en-
croaching into the- east or westbound lane of Mascolo Road . The inves-
tigator took measurements of the intersection, returned to the office,
drew d` sketch of the intersection and determined that trailer trucks r
would also encroach on the left southbound lane of Route 5 when at-
tempting to exit from Mascolo Road to proceed south on Route 5 . The
cause of lane encroachments is the small radii of the corners of the
intersection. The attached sketch shoes the desired radii for trailer
t-rucks in addition to existing radii . The business nature of companies
located on Mascolo Road generates the traffic in tractor-trailer trucks .
As you know, the responsibility for improving the radii rests with
the Town of South Windsor . I suggest you consider increasing those
radii, under permit , when funds are available . The Division of TrafT-tc-
will be pleased to help formulate the plans required for a change and _
will do so upon request from you .
