Subject: Mill on the River Restaurant
Jeff, Fred,
F.Y.I., I met with Tom Walker and John Skipper from Skips Septic Service today(August 31, 2010)@ 9:00 a.m.
to discuss some problems that the Mill was having with their existing sewage system. The system includes a
grease trap(a septic tank that acts as a settlement chamber)and a pump chamber with grinder pump. Effluent is
pumped through an existing force line under the Podunk River Bridge discharging to an existing sewer manhole
near the south parking lot. This existing force Fine according to John Skipper is constructed of 2 inch cast iron that
is deteriorated although a portion of the pipe (entering into the sewer manhole)appeared to be PVC.
Apparently, Skips had received a call from the Mill to investigate as they had observed effluent running from the
embankment(on the north side of the bridge)down to the river. John had exposed the pipe at the embankment
and determined that the pipe was deteriorated. They cut the pipe and ran a temporary line above ground to the
manhole, lashing the pipe to the bridge parapet wall. They are proposing to run a new pipe through the existing
pipe sleeve under the bridge and re-connect to the manhole. I told Tom and John that a permit will be needed for
repair of the system, along with a street excavation permit with the state to work in the right-of-way.We also had
a discussion about the type of pipe to use and the design size. I mentioned that Frank Smith Co. had installed the
original system and that they should check with them regarding using the correct pipe size but they were going to
use Blake Equipment instead. I also mentioned that the new Fine will have to be pressure tested and I gave them
a copy of the Town's Public improvement Specifications for Pressure Sewer Systems and testing requirements.

Hey Joe,
Attached is the info that I received, hopefully you understand Greek. I do not.
The technician explained the process to me and it sounds like the right application.
We are proposing to use this insulation wrap on 2" SCH80 pipe which will be pressure tested as you
requested.
I spoke with Bob Klybas at Blake Equipment who is very familiar with the pump chamber involved. He
explained that the pumps in use are high horsepower with 3" discharge pipes. He is comfortable with
the fact that they are bushed down to 2" and claims it provides optimal scouring. Further reduction to
1.5" or 1.25" may be detrimental to pump function.
Thanks for your time.
