Tom Melton of J.E. Dunn is removing the temporary drainage pipe and regrading the swale; 2. Three recordable mylars of the site plan have been submitted to your office for PZC signatures. Please notify DPI when they are ready for recording in the office of the Town Clerk; 3. Attorney Irwin Hausman is handling the recording of the sanitary sewer easement in favor of the Town of South Windsor from the site to Burnham Street; 4. We are providing additional spot elevations in the vicinity of the swale(see revised as-built survey submitted with this communication). 5. Reference to an outlet structure for a discharge from the retention basin to the I-291 ditch has been removed from the as-built survey. This was reviewed by the D.O.T. drainage section as part of the encroachment permit, and the encroachment permit was subsequently issued by D.O.T. in July. Incidentally,Bob Arsenault has inspected the retention pond/swale after the 50 year storm event of September 16 (preceded by a 25 year storm event on September 10),and found it to be performing satisfactorily. 6. We are labeling the 18"CMP and providing an invert elevation in the vicinity of the access drive. 7. We have modified the as-built survey drainage in the vicinity of the entrance drive. 8. We have labeled the gas service line on sheet 3 of 3. 9. Wetland plantings are to be installed by the landscape contractor per the approved site plan. 10. Aerators are to be installed by the contractor per the approved site plan. 165 South Satellite Road, South Windsor,Connecticut 06074 Tel: (860)291-8755 •Fax: (860)291-8757 r Please call if you should have any questions. Lake Avenue Glenview, Illinois (Chicago Suburb) 60025 312 729-0646 July 16, 1979 RECEIVED J U L 1 g i%o Mr. David W. Hanson President FAB CON, INCORPORATED 6111 West Highway 13 Savage, MN 55378 Dear Dave: In your letter of July 6 you asked me to evaluate the fire endurance of three pre- cast concrete wall panels which you manufacture of hollow-core units. These are shown on the attached sketch. The first is a 12-in. sandwich panel which has an "equivalent weight" of 79 psf; the second is an 8-in. panel which has an equivalent weight of 60 psf; and the third is a similar 8-in. panel with the cores filled with vermiculite. _ In my opinion, the fire endurance of the first panel is in excess of 4 hr, that of the second is more than 2 hr, and that of the third is probably more than 5 hr, and certainly more than 4 hr. My opinion is based on the fallowing: 1 . The 12-in. insulated panel has an equivalent thickness of carbonate aggregate concrete of 6.58 in. plus voids plus 1 in. of foamed poly- styrene insulation. From Fig. 7.1 of "Design for Fire Resistance of Precast Prestressed Concrete" (PCI fire manual) the fire endurance of the concrete alone is 3 hr 55 min (235 min) , and from page 50 of the same manual, the foamed polystyrene has an equivalent "R" of 5 minutes. Disregarding the voids, the overall fire endurance according to Eq. 7.1 is: R = (235)0.59 + (5)0.59 1.7 = 282 min = 4 hr 42 min 2. The equivalent thickness of the 8-in. panel is 5.0 in. Prom Fig. 7.1, the fire endurance for 5.0 in. of carbonate aggregate concrete is about 2 hr 16 min. 3. In the 1934 report, "Tests of the Fire Resistance and Strength of Walls of Concrete Masonry Units", Menzel concluded that the fire endurance of 8-in. hollow masonry walls may be more than doubled by filling the core spaces with different aggregate materials. Enclosed are copies of -VHE CONBUL..TING ENGINEERS GROUP mc. M r. David W. Hanson July 16, 1979 Page Two the pertinent pages from Menzel's classic report. Menzel did not, how- ever, u-se vermiculite aggregate as a fill material. In 1967, the Vermi- culite Institute sponsored a fire test at Underwriters Laboratories of an 8-in. block wall with cores filled with vermiculite aggregate. A copy of the U L report is enclosed. Note that the portion of the wall with unfilled cores had a fire endurance of 3 hr 21 minutes. At 6 hr 05 min the average temperature of the unexposed surface of the portion of the wall with filled cores was only 1950F. Thus it Is apparent that Menzel's conclusion is applicable to vermiculite aggregate. I have no doubt that with the large core area in your panels, the fire endurance with water-repellent ver- miculite in the cores will exceed five hours. Please let me know if you have any questions.
