WETLAND SOILS
Aq Aquents- This is a poorly to very poorly drained, disturbed soil where two or more feet of the original
soil surface has been altered by filling, excavation and/or grading. Aquents are characterized by a seasonal
to prolonged high groundwater table at or near the ground surface. Aquents are capable of supporting a
prevalence of hydrophytic plants.
NON-WETLAND SOILS
21 Ninigret and Tisbury soils(Aquic Dystrudepts)—These are deep, moderately well drained, friable,
coarse-loamy and loamy textured soils developed over sandy and gravelly outwash or water-sorted
materials derived from schist, gneiss and granite. Ninigret and Tisbury soils occur in valleys, outwash plains
and terraces.
36 Windsor loamy sand (Typic Udipsamments)—This is a deep, excessively drained, friable, sandy
textured soil developed over sandy and gravelly outwash or water-sorted materials derived from schist,
gneiss.and granite. In places soil materials were deposited and re-worked by the wind. Windsor soils occur
in valleys; outwash plains and terraces.
Notes: Inland Wetlands are present on the property as poorly drained Aquents soil located within a man-made
drainage ditch. Within the property the ditch has a 3 to 6 feet width and is about 1 to 2 feet deep. _On 5/19/09
soils in the bottom of the ditch were saturated and in places there was 1 to 2 inches of standing water. Plants
growing in the bottom of the ditch mainly consisted of sensitive fern and impatiens. The ditch extends to a
culvert at Strong Road. There was no discharge from the ditch into the culvert on 5/19/09.

DEFINITIONS AND METHODOLOGY
DEFINITIONS OF STATE REGULATED WETLANDS & WATERCOURSES
INLAND WETLANDS AND WATERCOURSES: According to Section 22a-38 of the State of
Connecticut Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Act, Wetlands "means land, including submerged land,
not regulated pursuant to sections 22a-28 to 22a-35, which consists of any of the soil types designated as
poorly drained, very poorly drained, alluvial, and floodplain by the National.Cooperative Soils Survey, as
may be amended from time to time, of the Natural Resources Conservation Service(MRCS) of the United
States Department of Agriculture." Watercourses "means rivers, streams, brooks, waterways, lakes,
ponds, marshes, swamps, bogs and all other bodies of water, natural or artificial, vernal or intermittent,
public or private. Intermittent watercourses shall be delineated by a:defined permanent channel and bank
and the occurrence of two or more of the following characteristics:'(A) Evidence of scour or deposits of
recent alluvium or detritus, (B)the presence of standing or flowing water for a duration longer than a
particular storm incident, and(C)the presence of hydrophytic vegetation:"
TIDAL WETLANDS: According to Connecticut General Statutes, Sec. 22a-29 (2) of the Tidal Wetlands
Act, Tidal Wetlands are defined as "those areas which border on or lie beneath tidal waters, such as, but
not limited to banks, bogs, salt marsh, swamps, meadows, flats, or other low lands subject to tidal action,
including those areas now or formerly connected to tidal waters, and whose surface is at or below an
elevation of one foot above local extreme high water; and upon which may grow or be capable of growing
some, but not necessarily all of the following:" (list of those plants common to tidal marshes, brackish
wetlands and other wetlands which are subject to tidal influence).
METHODOLOGY FOR IDENTIFICATION OF SOILS, WETLANDS & WATERCOURSES
1) SOILS IDENTIFICATION: Soils are investigated by digging test holes with a spade and auger. Test
holes are typically dug to depths of between 15 and 40 inches. Based on soil features, including
coloration patterns, texture and depths to restrictive layers, the sails are identified by soil series utilizing
the classification system of the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The soil map series correspond with
the State.Soil Map Legend established by USDA, NRCS.in the State of Connecticut Soil Survey. For
further information about soils.refer.to the NRC.S wehsite Bot CT: Lvvrw.-.ct.nrc-,:usda.gov:
2) INLAND WETLAND DELINEATION: Soil test holes and borings are made in selected areas in
order to determine the lateral extent of Inland Wetlands: The boundaries of all Inland Wetlands on each
project site are delineated with consecutively numbered survey tapes, unless instructed by the client to
only map wetland boundaries for planning purposes.
3)IDENTIFICATION OF WATERCOURSES: Watercourse locations are sketched onto maps. Often
ponds, streams and rivers are already shown on the survey map. If a-watercourse is not shown on a
survey map, survey tapes are placed along the channel and labeled "Intermittent or Perennial
Watercourse."
4) TIDAL WETLANDS: Tidal Wetlands are identified based on a predominance of tidal wetland plants
and observation of physical markings or water laid deposits resulting from tidal action. Tidal Wetland
boundaries are established by locating the upland limits of the "Listed Plants" from, the Tidal Wetlands
Act to the extent that these plants reflect inundation by tides.

application for a site plan for a parking lot located southerly of Strong Road and westerly of Ident Road.
Industrial (1) Zone.
Tomek Grajewski, Zuvic Associates, presented the application. Mr. Grajewski provided requested
drainage computations associated with this application to Mr. Folger. The site is a 1 acre rear lot located
at the intersection of Strong Road and Ident Road. The parking lot is intended for employees' cars only,
across the street from the school bus parking. Wetlands are located only in the northern corner of the
parcel and do not exceed 360 sq ft. There is an 80 ft wetland buffer and a drainage ditch on the property
specifically created to consolidate runoff from the properties on the west and east. This ditch extends
into a culvert at Strong Road. The provided soil scientist report stated there was no discharge from the
ditch into the culvert upon inspection on May 19, 2009. The soil scientist report also stated that, other

than the wetland area indicated, the soil is well drained and sandy and does not support much vegetation.
The proposal is to following the existing topographical gradian. There will be limited pavement—for an
access to the road with a curb cut and as well as a 4 ft wide sidewalk. The rest of the site will be either
processed stone where vehicles are parked or landscaped areas in between the aisles as well as on the
southern and western boundaries. Proposed grades correspond to the existing grades to maintain
direction of surface flow, with no increase in storm water volume expected. A bio-retention area,
surrounded by vegetation(primarily sedge and New England wet mix, will be built to provide additional
filtering for storm water runoff. A sediment sump for lowering velocities and sediment will provide the
outlet from the biofilter area. There will also be an extended detention storage, which will have capacity
to support at least 24 hours before this area is totally drained. Various types of berry bushes will
surround the area. Some of the existing trees on the property line will be remove to construct the buffer.
There will no disturbance to the wetland area. The upland area will be planted with upland meadow
mix or grass seed. Folger: The primary function of the wetland on this property is ground water and
storm water conveyance from the main wetlands from the north to Strong Road. The proposed plan
should ensure this is maintained. Warren: do we need a drainage level report to make sure it will work
the way it is engineered to? Folger: probably not, because of the location of the drainage pipe—it will
not be a dry basin, it will be able to support the wetland plants and seed mix,but will not have standing
water(due to mosquito concerns).
