These changes include the sanitary sewer connection which is now proposed to connect to the existing 2" force main at 1265 John Fitch Boulevard. As the revised site plan indicates, these two parcels (1249 & 1265) have been merged into a single parcel. The existing force main at 1265 exits the pump chamber (midway down the south side of the building) and runs approximately 427 feet under the existing floor slab until it reaches an existing manhole with gravity sewer lateral outlet on the east side of building. The new 2" force main from 1249 will connect directly to the existing force main between the pump station and the 1265 building slab. The pump station coordinator, F.J. Smith (Blake Equipment Co., Inc.) has reviewed the proposed configuration and determined that both pump stations can utilize the same force main effectively. If preferred, the pumps could also be coordinated to pump at different times. Enclosed are correspondence from F.J. Smith and calculations demonstrating performance of both pumps working simultaneously. We have also enclosed a WPCA application form and two revised copies of sheets 3 of 9 (site plan) and 9 of 9 (pump station detail) for your review and processing. RUSSO & ASSOCIATES RECEIVED Land Surveyors & Professional Engineers NOV 2 62007 W PCA SOUTH WINDSOR,CT November 21, 2007 Fred Shaw South Windsor Water Pollution Control Authority 1540 Sullivan Avenue South Windsor, CT 06074 Re: Force Main Analysis 1249 & 1265 John Fitch Boulevard South Windsor, CT Dear Mr. Shaw: As requested, I have completed an analysis of the existing 2-inch force main serving 1249 & 1265 John Fitch Boulevard. A schematic of the existing force main showing pump locations and elevations is attached. The existing pump at 1249 John Fitch Boulevard is a Myers WG20, 2 hp grinder pump. The pump performance curve provided by Blake Equipment is attached. The proposed pump at 1265 John Fitch Boulevard will be a HOMA GRP26/3 grinder pump. Its pump performance curve is also attached. When pumping alone, the new HOMA pump will have to overcome the friction of the entire 594 feet of 2-inch force main and an elevation head of 17 feet. A pump system curve for these parameters is attached. When plotted on the pump performance curve for the HOMA pump, it indicates that the pump will run at 43.5 gallons per minute (gpm) at a total dynamic head (TDH) of approximately 39 feet. When pumping at the same time as the existing pump, a portion of the force main will be subject to a higher combined flow rate producing larger friction losses. The second 427 foot section of force main will be subject to the combined flow, while the first 167' section of force main will only be subject to the flow of the first pump. As a result of the higher flow rates in the second section of force main, both pumps will be subject to higher heads. The actual pumping rates of each pump under these conditions were determined by trial and error. The resulting pump rates for the existing pump and new pumps pumping together are approximately 43.5 gpm and 39.5 gpm, respectively. The first branch of the force main will be subject to the 39.5 gpm flow while the second branch of the force main will be subject to a combined flow of 88 gpm. To verify these rates,we calculate the friction loss in each section of pipe and check that the expected flow rates match their.respective pump curves. The friction loss in the first section of pipe will equal to approximately 3.7 feet (0.0222 ft/ft loss at 39.5 gpm x 167 ft). The friction loss in the second branch of pipe will be approximately 36.7 feet (0.0859 ft/ft loss at 88 gpm x 427 ft). Thus, the existing pump will see a TDH of 40.7 feet (36.7 ft friction loss in second branch + 4 ft of elevation head). From the pump curve, this results in a flow of approximately 43.5 gpm. The new pump will 1 Shoham Road - East Windsor, CT 06088 - TEL: (860) 623-0569 - FAX: (860) 623-2485 be subject to a TDH of 57.3 feet (36.7 feet of friction loss in second branch+ 3.7 feet friction loss in I"branch+ 17 feet of elevation head). A quick check of the pump curve shows that this corresponds to a flow rate of 39.5 gpm. In conclusion, both pumps are capable of pumping at these flow rates and the force main and pumps will be able to work adequately when the two pumps are pumping alone or together. I hope this information satisfactorily address your concerns. If there are any questions, or you require further information, please call our office at(860) 623-0569. Since ly, 't Timothy A. The existing pump station at 1265 John Fitch Boulevard has Myers WG20 Grinder pumps installed with a maximum flow rate of 40 GPM and a maximum 100 `shutoff head. These are also rnaximm figures. The existing pumps could have an impeller trim further reducing the flow rate to match the existing head condition. The existing head condition was not stated in the old file. (Please see attached curve) These pumps have an 11/4" discharge increasing in size to a 2" force main outside of the old pump station. The thinking is to share the existing 2" force main for both pump stations with isolation valves for future service considerations. If operation of both pump stations simultaneously is a concern it is possible to interlock the new pump station so that it does not pump till the older pump station is finished. The new station has more capacity than the old one. From an equipment manufacturers perspective there is no problem doing this due to the size of the pumps and associated flow rates.
