Dear Ms.O'Connor,
I am writing to you about a very special organization:The Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle and Legacy Club.
They.have been an integral part of our extended T3 family at the V.A.Medical Center in West Haven,CT
for the last five years. T3 is a sub-acute,geriatric extended care unit at the VA: The veterans on the unit
have a wide range of medical issues. The hours spent rehabilitating in a hospital is often lonely and
isolating. The Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle and Legacy Club reach 60t to our veteran community by
offering activities,refreshments and most importantly,company.
The Club has been volunteering every 0 Monday of the month for the last five years. On the 1'Monday
of each month, they sponsor and facilitate a Bingo. They invite not only the veterans of T3 but also the
Blind Center patients and the-PTSD patients. Word of mouth among the veterans at the hoital is that
"this is the best Bingo"at the VA. The reason th sp
e word of mouth is so positive about their Bingo is
because of the care, camaraderie and of course delicious sandwiches they provide.
"Grandparents Day"began as a dream 3 years ago. The staff had wanted to make the day a reality for the
patients on our unit and their families, but did not have the funds or manpower to run the event We needed
to fmd an organization to sponsor the event. The Vietnam Veterans not only wanted to sponsor the event,
but have been actively involved in running it with us every September-for the last 3 years. They contribute
their many talents and time to making the day a most enjoyable one for the patients and their families. On
Grandparents Day they do whatever is needed, from manning-the grill to running craft tables.
The Club and its members are some of the most dedicated, responsible and dependable community service
volunteers I have ever encountered. Many of them work full time and have families of their own;however,
come the I`Monday of month, they consistently show up at the VA in West Haven and devote their
time to the patients.
We are forever grateful to the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle and Legacy Club for their deep commitment
and outstanding devotion to the V.A.
Sincerely,
Mary Lou Lauricella
