WETLAND SOIL SERIES Walpole Series (Wd) The Walpole series consists of deep, poorly drained soils formed in sandy water-deposited glacial outwash materials. They are nearly level to gently sloping soils on glaciofluvial landforms, typically in shallow drainage iyays and logy-lying positions on stream terraces and out`vash plains. The soils formed in loamy over stratified sandy and gravelly outtivash derived from a variety-of acid rocks. Typically these soils have a very dark bro«n sandy loam surface layer 6 inches thick. The subsoil from 6 to 23 inches is mottled, grayish brown sandy loam. The substratum from 23 to 60 inches is mottled, light brownish gray, gravelly loamy sand and gravelly sand. Walpole soils are poorly drained. The seasonal high water table is within 0 to 12 inches of the surface from late fall through spring. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderately rapid in the surface layer and subsoil and rapid or very rapid in the substratum. Walpole soils have a water table at or near the surface much of the vear. UPLAND (NON-WETLAND)SOILS SERIES Ninigret Series (Nn) The Ninigret series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils formed in a coarse-loamy mantle underlain by sandy water deposited glacial outwash materials. They are nearly level to gently-sloping soils on glaciofluvial landforms, typically in slight depressions and broad drainage ways. The soils formed in loamy over stratified sandy and gravelly outwash derived from a variety of acid rocks. Typically, these soils have a yen-dark grayish brown fine sandy loam surface layer 8 inches thick. The subsoil from 8 to 26 inches is yellowish bro-%sm fine sandy loam ivith mottles below 16 inches. The substratum from 26 to 60 inches is mottled, pale brown, loose, stratified loamy sand. Ninigret soils are moderately-well drained. The seasonal high ground water table is between 18 and 30 inches of the surface from late fall through spring. Surface runoff is slo-,y to medium. Permeability is moderate or moderately rapid in the surface layer and subsoil and rapid or very rapid in the substratum. They are level to very steep soils on outwash plains and high stream terraces. The soils formed in loamy-over stratified sandy and gravelly- glacial outwash derived mainly from crystalline rocks. Typically these soils have a dark grayish brown fine sandy loam surface layer 11 inches thick. The subsoil from 11 to 26 inches is dark yellowish broNyn and light olive brown fine sandy loam. The substratum from 26 to 55 inches is olive and olive broN-,n loamv fine sand. Below 55 inches it is stratified fine sand to gravelly loamy sand. Agawam soils are well drained. The water table is commonly-below 6 feet. Surface runoff is slow to medium. Permeability-is moderate or moderately rapid in the surface laver and subsoil and very rapid in the substratum. The wetlands were field delineated in accordance with the standards of the National Cooperative Soil Survey-and the definition of wetlands as found in the Connecticut General Statutes, Chapter 440, Section 22A-38. By:, ?T`^ I Andrea M.Mbmnie Executive Coordinator Cc: Jeffrey Folger Marcia Banach Doug Nation 165 South Satellite Road,South Windsor,Connecticut 06074 Tel:(860)291-8755•Fax:(860)291-8757 www.designprofessionalsinc.com MEMORANDUM To: South Windsor Inland Wetland/Conservation Commission. From: Jeffrey H. Folger—Environmental Planner/Conservation Officer Date: May 31, 2006 Re: Apple. #06-29P - Review of the proposed Nation subdivision. Plans dated 7/24/00. The project is to subdivide the existing property to accommodate a two single family building lots. Regulated activities include the filling and grading within the 80-foot regulated upland review area to accommodate a septic system and a portion of a yard. Proposed disturbance is estimated at approximately 5,217 sqft of disturbance in the upland review area. Site: The site is located in the Plum Gully Brook watershed. The parcel is comprised of 3.9 acres and slopes down moderately to the north. The site currently is unoccupied, but a house was recently demolished on the lot that was located adjacent to Smith Street. One half of the site is cleared. The remaining 1/2 (western and northern portion) is forested and contains both upland forest(previously disturbed) and a wetland/watercourse corridor. The regulated area would be considered a watercourse(swamp/stream corridor) and lies at the northern end of the parcel. This area is defined by topography. The channel and associated floodplain being 6-8 feet lower than the adjacent upland to the south. The channel flows east to west, into a pond north of Redfield Estates, and eventually joins the Plum Gully Brook channel. The wetland boundary shown is accurate. Functional values of the watercourse would be stormwater conveyance, sediment trapping and nutrient removal, flood storage, and wildlife habitat. The riparian area associated with the stream represents a significant wildlife corridor with several different kinds of habitat types along the corridor. Disturbance is present on both sides of the eastern portion of the corridor. Residential development has occurred along the southern edge for most of the length. One half of the northern edge has been historically used for agriculture and is presently being developed into dense commercial. A riparian area ranging from 10 to 100 feet exists on both sides of the watercourse. Impacts: Short Term: Soils on the site are mapped as Agawam Fine Sandy Loam(AfB) 3 to 8% slopes and Ninigret Fine Sandy Loam(NnB) 3 to 8% slopes. These soils are listed as low to medium erosion potential by the Hartford County Soil Survey. Erosion control shown should be adequate to control migrating sediments generated by construction activities. Long Term: Existing upland habitat in the eastern portion of the site will be reduced due to clearing activities. Cover for protection and nesting will be lost as in any project where upland habitat is disturbed or replaced with development. The proposed plan should not post an unreasonable impact to the wetlands. a. v 4OW N SC x t -own 0-p s-outh • o a s 1540 SULLIVAN AVENUE • SOUTH WINDSOR, CT 06074 fOSox c°`'` TELEPHONE (860) 644-2511 June 9, 2006 Certified #70042510000398029592 Design Professionals, Inc.
