Home is located on a corner lot at the corner of Rye Street and Farnham Road across from Rye
Street Park.
Two'-thirds of the home is surrounded by 35-40 foot pine trees creating a privacy barrier around the
front and left side of home. There are neighbors directly behind us and to the right.

History-We were able to purchase this home in 1996, after renting it for over ten years. Said
property was put on the market in January of 1997 so that we could purchase a larger home for our
growing family. Due to our busy location, difficulty in exiting the driveway and being located at a
stop sign,we were unable to sell our home.
We are proposing to build a 16 ft. wide x 35 ft. long addition onto an existing home by enclosing the
current carport located at such address. Such address is located in an established neighborhood
"Farnham Estates" which was built in the 19501s.
Due to the way the home is situated on the lot-there is a lack of usable footage behind the home (35
feet). Our"backyard" is actually located to the right side of our carport. Our picnic table,
children's sandbox and swing are located there. Being forced to attach a garage would block my
view of the children playing.
Alternatives - The only possible alternatives to adding onto the property are: building up which
would only increase bedrooms - not living space; or to build to the east of the current carport(90
available feet)which is our current plan. According to South Windsor's code we must attach a
garage or carport to our existing home, in addition to the addition. In doing so, our home would be
extremely elongated and look like something short of an "aircraft carrier".
Impact of Addition -Addition would enlarge the kitchen and living room adding much needed living
space,while providing a clear view to my children's play area. This addition would in no way
impede the boundary lines or effect any of our neighbors. This addition would add to the value of
our home and neighborhood.

According to South Windsor Building Code 11.2 "each single family
dwelling shall have a building (garage private) or part thereof as an
accessory to the building for the storage of one or more automobiles':
We applied to the Town of South Windsor for a building permit to
construct an addition, which includes enclosing our carport,plus an
additional six feet. We do not want to build a garage or carport!!
Therefore, we must apply for a variance and appear before the Zoning
Board of Appealsfor approval on September 4th
