Zoning Board of Appeals
Re: Variance to increase sign size
As per our application, Boat Works of South Windsor, Inc. is asking the Town of South
Windsor's Zoning Board of Appeals for a variance to increase the square footage of a
proposed street sign from 20 s.f. to 42 s.f.
The sign is to be located approximately 20' +from the curb on the east side of the
existing driveway entrance and approximately 15'+ from the edge of the driveway. The
sign is to be built out of a combination of pilings, MDO plywood and vinyl graphics. The
overall height is 10' and sign width is 6' plus the dimensions of the pilings.
It is to be externally light by single flood lights set back approximately 8' on each
side of the sign. The sign will be light from dusk to approximately 1 A.M. daily including
weekends.
The theme of the sign is nautical which represents the business and services it is
displaying. The primary colors are blue, red, white and black. The background color is
blue to represent the water and the top is capped with white wood trim representing a
wave or white cap. The sign is supported by pilings lashed together with heavy line
similar to a old pier. The base of the sign sits approximately 2' above the ground and will
be landscaped appropriately. The logos and their colors on the sign are produced directly
from the manufactures trademarks or logos. They will all be of the same scale so to
balance each other out.
Since the building is considerably removed from the road, a small sign would not
be noticed sufficiently since it would not be expected without a building near for a point of
association. Even more important, all the companies which we service have as part of
their contracts that " dealer will identify this product and service by means of outdoor
signage and other means, all consistent with the image and quality of our products".
People now even with appointments and written directions, just pass by us. The sign must
be very noticeable so that it and then the building can be spotted immediately leaving
sufficient time for a safe stop and turn into the driveway. It should also be noted that the
renovation of the existing barn has received many compliments and we feel after much
consideration and ideas that our choice and design of this signage will add to that image.

RE: Application #2243-95 - Boat Works of South Windsor, Inc .
620 Sullivan Avenue
Dear Sir:
At the April 6, 1995 meeting of the South Windsor Zoning Board of
Appeals, a motion to approve your request for a variance to section
6 . 1 . 5 . 7 to allow a sign to be larger than allowed, 48 sq. ft. , 10
ft. in height (20 sq. ft. , 7 ft. in height allowed) on property
located at 620 Sullivan Avenue, I Zone, failed.
The concern expressed by members of the Board were:
The size of the sign, including the supports was too large.
Very truly yours,
Robert W. Warren, Chairman
Zoning Board of Appeals
