SOILS CAPABILITIES
CAPABILITY UNIT I:
EsA -Enfield silt loam, 0-3% slopes
Prime Farmland
This soil is well drained and medium textured. It responds well to management.
There is some risk of erosion in unprotected areas, even on gentle slopes. It
is well suited to all crops grown in Hartford County.
CAPABILITY UNIT II:
EnB -Elmwood sandy loam, 3-8% slopes
EoB -Elmwood very fine sandy loam, 3-8% slopes
Prime Farmland
This series consists of moderately well drained soils. They have developed
over glacial-lake silt and clay at depths of 24-48 inches. EnB-Runoff from
clean cultivated fields can be controlled by the use of simple practices.
EoB-Intensive practices are needed to control runoff and erosion.
NnA -Ninigret fine sand laom, 0-3% slopes
Prime Farmland
This series consists of moderately well drained to somewhat poorly drained
soils. Without drainage, the soil generally is suited to silage corn, late
vegetables, hay, and pasture. Fully drained or partly drained areas are suitable
for tobacco, potatoes, and general crops. However, tobacco and potatoes are
subject to damage in very wet seasons during the summer.
BxB -Buxton silt loam, 3-8% slopes
Additional Farmland of statewide importance.
This series consists of moederately well drained, silty soils. These soils
have a strongly acid surface soil and subsoil . Intensive practices are needed
to control erosion in cultivated fields.
CAPABILITY UNIT III:
SzA -Swanton very fine sandy loam, 0-3% slopes
Additional Farmland of statewide importance.
This series consists of poorly drained soils. It is not as well suited to tobacco,
potatoes, and similar crops, even if drained.
WvB -Windsor loamy fine sand , 3-8% slopes
Additional Farmland
This series consists of very droughty sand and loamy sand. Unprotected slopes
are subject to some water and wind erosion.
SOILS CAPABILITIES Page 2
John-Mitc[Tel 1.
g
CAPABILITY UNIT IV:
ScA -Scantic silt loam, 9-3% slopes
Additional Farmland (wetlands)
This series consists of poorly drained to somewhat poorly drained, silty soils.
The surface soil and subsoil are very strongly acid. The soil is more suitable
for hay and pasture than for cultivated crops because drainage is very difficult.
Leveling and bedding are the most practical ways to drain the soil ; tile drains
and open ditches are not satisfactory. In places open ditches can be used to
prevent ponding.
CAPABILITY UNIT V:
BfA -Biddeford silt loam, 0-3% slopes
Wetlands
This series consists of very poorly drained silty soils. Very poor drainage
limits the use of this soil mainly to forests. Some areas can be used for
pasture if drained by open ditches.
SeA -Scarboro loam, 0-3% slopes
Wetlands
This series consists of very poorly drained soils. Partly drained areas pro-
duce fair pasture if they are limed and fertilized. Undrained areas produce
poor pasture. Because of the sandy and gravelly substrata, this soil can be
readily drained if suitable outlets are available.
CAPABILITY UNIT VI:
SbA -Saco silt loam, 0-3% slopes
Wetlands
The Saco series consists of frequently flooded, very poorly drained soils on
flood plains. Water stands on the surface of most areas for long periods in
winter and spring. This soil is used mainly for forest, unimproved pasture,
and wildlife. Drainage is generally not practical because of frequent flooding
and the lack of suitable outlets.

Dear Mr. Mitchell .
In response to your request to the Hartford County Soil and Water Conservation
District, I visited your property on November 26, 1984, to determine feasibility.
The soil type at the pond site is (BfA) Biddeford silt loam, which is a wetland
by P.A. 155 as amended; and therefore a town inland wetland permit is necessary.
Due to your proximity to the Podunk River an Army Corp of Engineers permit may
be required, a phone call to Waltham, Massachusetts at 617-894-2400 will confirm
whether you do or not.
Construction of a dugout pond is feasible. The size proposed is approximately
200' x 100' x 10' . Slideslopes should be 3:1 or greater because of soil stability.
During construction the following steps are recommended.
4
1. Do construction in July or August. These soils are hard to work with
and this is usually the driest part of the summer.
2. A natural outlet spillway approximately 10 feet wide will be left at the
lower end of the pond.
3. Surface material should be stockpiled until grading and shaping is complete.
Then cover and seed the site.
4. Seeding recommendations are enclosed.
5. No spoil material should be placed inside the floodplain area. It is
determined at Elevation 72 which we could set for you prior to construction.
6. Follow sketch for technical information.
Other information: The soil is excellent for a pond site, but fluctuations in the
water table will effect your water elevation.
If you have any further questions or wish further assistance please contact this
office.
Sincerely,
Ste en Cashman
Soil Conservationist

RE: Application #499, Mitchell Pond
Dear Mr. Moran:
It appears that the approximate 4,500 cubic yards excavated from
this pond has been removed from the pond site and the only thing
left to do is the seeding. This would complete this permit per
SCS.
