ON-SITE SOILS INVESTIGATION OF PROPERTY FOR RUSSELL AND SUSAN PETERSEN IN SOUTH WINDSOR
I have conducted an on-site soils investigation of the property located on
Burgess Road near Foster Road in South Windsor, Connecticut. The principal purpose
of this soils investigation was to locate and flag in the field all poorly and very
poorly drained soils or "wetlands" as defined under the Inlands Wetlands Act. The
flags were located by survey and plotted onto a boundary map. In this soils inves-
tigation and report, the classifications of the soils, soil textures, descriptive
terms, and drainage classifications follow the guidelines and criteria of the
National Cooperative Soil Survey.
FINDINGS----
The property consists of gently sloping .to nearly level silty soils developed
in silts over sand deposits. The property appears to be largely an outwash deposit.
Part of the property from the corner of Foster Road and Burgess Road to be woods
consists primarily of well drained and moderately well drained soils. These soils
_were checked only for drainage and not total classifications. These soils extend
into the woods that continues west to the property boundary. In the woods there is
a depression that consists of poorly drained soils. These poorly drained soils
are a depression that simply is low to a ground water table. These soils receive
water from surrounding upland soils but the watershed area is very small and runoff
and seepage into this wetland is minor .and does not create the poorly drained soil
moisture regime. Any overflow from this depression during very wet periods goes directly
into a ditch channel which was dug for agricultural drainage many years ago. The
ditch is a perennial stream or drainageway because it is low and appears to be flowing
most of the year.
The soils within the wetlands consists primarily of 15 to 25 inches of silt loam
over sand. The sand is deep extending below 40 inches. The soils are just poorly
drained and do not have any significant very poorly drained inclusions. The closest
classification of the soil is the Rippowam silt loam, variant, 0 to 3 percent slopes.
This soil varies from the named soil by having a silt loam surface and silty subsoil
in places. The closestclassification in the Hartford County Soil Survey is the
Walpole loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes. Basically this soil consists of a thin silt
mantle over a sand deposit. The silt loam has a moderate permeability and the under-
lying substratum has a rapid to very rapid permeability.
ON-SITE SOILS INVESTIGATION I SOIL MAPPING I ..WETLAND*' IDENTIFICATION I SOILS INFORMATION AND C014SULTATIOIMM':
SOILS INVESTIGATION OF PETERSEN PROPERTY IN SOUTH WINDSOR---2 HTM 9/10/88
Because of drainage changes made for agriculture, the functions of this wet-
land on the land is relatively limited. The drainage ditch is the primarily wet-
land which carries water through the property. The spoil piles along the ditch
also restrict the flow of water from the ditch into the wetland and from the wet-
land back into the ditch. Under existing conditions, . the wetland is isolated and
has a very small watershed area limited to soils in the immediate area on the property
and on adjacent land. Due to these restrictions, this wetland has no significant
value as a water storage or detention basin. It also is not significant was a water
recharge area due to the limited watershed area. The soil surface is very near the
ground water table. Fluctuations of the water table will be due more to regional
fluctuations of the entire area rather than to local influence.
Any future proposal for a pond, homesite next to the wetland, or landscaping
or slight encroachment into the wetland, would not have a significant impact to the
function of the wetland or to other wetlands, especially the drainage ditch downstream.
The ditch is more important in functions than the depression to water movement through
the property and soils. Because the soils are poorly drained, they are also quite
dry for a long time during the growing season in most years. Thus, these areas are
generally in forest vegetation. A pond would actually enhance the basic function as
a wildlife area by creating more diversity and edges for wildlife. The ditch pro-
vides some diversity as a water body but it is very overgrown under present con-
ditions. Under present conditions, the wetland functions primarily as a depression
and serves as a forest environment. During wet seasons this area may becomed ponded
for short periods or as long as the water tables area high. The ditch controls the
water table in the area by providing the outlet.
The property can be developed as a homesite near and as part of this wetland
without a significant impact to the water table or other wetlands. Part of the land
is a cultivated field and part is in forest. If there are any questions, please do
not hesitate to contact me.
Res ectfully submitted,
l
enry Moeller
WETLAND SOIL DESCRIPTION---
Rippowam fine sandy loam, 0 to 5 percent slopes.
This soil is a poorly drained soil developed primarily on floodplains or
depressions subject to sedimentation. The topsoil ranges from 20 to 40 inches or
more in thickness and consists of very dark grayish brown fine sandy loam to sandy
loam. Textures of the surface is highly variable and may include sand deposits.
The underlying grays subsoil and substratum ranges from fine sandy loam to sand. The
ground water table is at or near the surface from late fall through early spring.
This soil is frequently flooded or ponded. The Rippowam series is classified as
coarse-loamy, mixed, nonacid, mesic Aeric Fluvaquents.
On the property the surface and part of the subsoil ' consists of silt loam.

Re: Application #88-110W - Burgess Road
Dear Mr. Lombardi:
In accordance with your letter of November 1990, I am
requesting an extension of our inland wetlands permit number 88-
11OW which expires December 19, 1990. I have enclosed a check in
the amount of $25.00 to cover the fee.
Construction has been completed and we anticipate no
disturbance to the area other than minimal grading and seeding.
We will continue to leave the a silt fence along the perimeter of
the wetlands in place as an additional safety measure.
Please forgive the delay in applying for this extension.
I 'm afraid it was due to an misunderstanding at our end. If you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 282-
1747.
Very truly yours,
Susan Petersen

Re: Application #88-110W - Burgess Road
Dear Mr. McCahill:
C I am writing to request an inspection at 125 Burgess Road,
South Windsor, Connecticut in compliance with the above-captioned
application number. Grading and seeding of the lawn have been
completed, and I believe the permit requires an inspection to
remove the silt fence running along the wetland boundary.
Please call me at work (240-6000) or home (282-1747) to
arrange a date convenient for you.
Very truly yours
Susan Petersen
