Due to present suburban trends, coupled with massive urban redevelopment programs, many communities"are-findih$ large rat i tfestat'ion$ in,their "best neighborhoods. The reasons f6r this are threefold: 1. Urban redevelopment without proper baiting programs, is causing migration of the rodents into previously uninfested areas.' 2. Social trends such as the purchasing of dogs to guard premises, the creation of backyard compost piles) and the use of: plastic trash bags for refuse disposal are-all adding to the problem. 3. Economic trends like (1) the rising cost of fuel oil is making people revert to their fireplaces for additional source of hest, i,e., fireplaces are now used for practical purposes`"and not just for aesthetic value; (2) the spiraling price ofgasoline ling forced people to entertain themselves in their own backyard in lieu of long day trips and vacations, hence the boom In bacicya.rd pools; (3) the cost of food has risen alarmingly causing people to raise their own foods by means of home gardens. Did you ever notice a chlorine smell? The majority of our large utilities chlorinate all their water on a voluntary basis. You may not like the smell, but your water probably came through miles of distribution pipes to get to your tap, and it needs the protection of chlorine to destroy all disease-causing organisms. Sometimes the water pressure falls due to a main line break or a fire hydrant being opened; your water utility wants to disinfect your water in case some contaminated water entered the distribution system. (Connecticut also requires any water company serving 20 thousand or more persons to add flouride to reduce dental cavities in our younger population.) • And,speaking of pressure, did you ever notice reduced water pressure in the early morning(6 to 8 a.m.) and early evening(6 to 8 p.m.)hours?This is when people ft are getting ready for school or work or returning home, r and everybody is washing, doing dishes or whatever. ' It may be a good idea not to start the dishwasher •r or clothes washer until after these peak times. To maintain water quality, your water utility .1 periodically flushes the water mains, usually in the spring and fall. This causes a lot of scouring of the F pipes'interiors and your water may become discolored for a short time. This is an inconvenience, but you should notice when the water clears that it is probably better than it was before the flushing because the pipes' utility and fellow water customers can make a good interiors are now a lot cleaner. water supply better.
