This committee will coordinate the fundraising, design, and installation of a barrier-free community playground where parents, grandparents, siblings and ALL children can play, relax, and interact with their neighbors and friends. The 20,000 square foot playground will provide a minimum of 70% accessibility to all, and will be located in Nevers Park near the South Windsor Community Center. The goal is to complete the project in the spring of 2005. The core group is comprised of concerned citizens, school and town staff as well as committed representatives from local business and service organizations. The committee invites all civic organizations, schools, churches, local businesses, scouting organizations, families, and individuals to join us in our efforts to achieve this goal. A Barrier Free playground will accomplish the following: ❑ Create a special playground where the equipment is at least 70% accessible to children and adults of all physical abilities. ❑ Provide a safe and exciting place where children and their families can play. ❑ Foster understanding and friendships through commonality of play. Similarly equipped playgrounds in surrounding community's range in cost from $200,000 to $350,000. To aid in the fund raising campaign a South Windsor Friends of Recreation 501 (3) (c) tax-exempt organization is being formed thus allowing donations to be tax deductible. This status will also allow for grant application and matching funds that many local companies support. Those interested in becoming part of this project or making a direct donation can contact Mike McCarty of the South Windsor Recreation Department at 648-6355 ext. 342 for further details. WHAT IS BARRIER FREE? • Commitment to child development, rigor, and challenge for all children. • ADA focuses on removing barriers to access. Barrier-Free goes beyond the ADA Standards. • Requires at least 70% of play activities serve children with physical disabilities, allowing greater"integration"of all children. (ADA is 25% to 50%) • Designed to be "sensory-rich," it will address the needs of all children with sensory and developmental disabilities. • Challenging and age-appropriate addressing every child's intellectual, physical, emotional and social needs. Allows the opportunity for individuals of all ages the ability to interact in a park setting and "Discover the Benefits" of play.
