Box 397 I1119 & Zoning Cornmission Glastonbury, CT 06033 (860)633-4623/FAX(860) 657-2514 March 28, 1996 Electron Technologies 300 Governors Highway; P.O. Box 316 South Windsor, CT 06074 Att : Mr. Richard Plank Re : Proposed Addition to Existing Building on Governors Highway; South Windsor, CT; Revised Plan Geotechnical Review Dear Mr. Plank: Regarding the above I received a copy of the proposed addition, which lifts the structure about 10 feet up from the initial elevation. This proposed placement has the advantage of constructing generally out of the water and avoiding shoring or underpinning of the existing building. The latter requirement would have probably caused some distress in the existing building. The elevating of the floor does increase the net superimposed .loading on the underlying varved Clay. The proposed loading on the mat foundation is about 3 , 200 psf . There wil be about 700 psf of relief from soil excavation, which puts a net loading on the soil of about 2, 500 psf . The effect of this supermimposed load is consolidation of the a depth of about 70 to 80 feet below the bottom of the mat . The clays in the area have generally been preconsolidated to 2, 500 to 3 , 000 psf and have modified coefficient of consolidation. The proposed loading does approach the limit of the modified coefficient . If the loading did not exceed the preconsolidation, settlement of the mat would be in the range of about 1 . 511 . With the possiblity of exceeding the limit the possible settlement of the mat would be 2 to 3 . 0" . The loading at the mat also loads to a lesser intensity . the clay beneath the existing building. The loading here would affect about 700 of compressible stratum with about 50°s of the load intensity. The estimated subsidence at the north wall over a length of about 70 feet would be 111to Y 7 Page 2 1 . 5" near the middle of the connection with new structure with no movement at about 40 feet east and west of the new structure . The settlement would feather to zero movement about 30 feet inside the existing building. In considering the above performance the only means of mitigating the setttlement would be deep piles (100 to 150 feet in length or placing the mat at a depth to compensate for the proposed loading. This will entail other problems, as cited above. The settlements at the existing building could be wit:igated by moving the new facility away from the existing building. Dewatering will be required during construction, but the water table will intercepted only one to two feet in wet seasons and shallow wells would probably suffice . Under Slab Waterproofing will be required, as cited inthe initial report . This can consist of VOLCLAY panels. There will be a requirement for water stops and water proofing to within 4 feet of grade. The stops and water proofing t could also be VOLCLAY materials . Care must be taken to properly terminate the panels at the wall to exclude seepage between the panels and the concrete . Backfill of walls shall conform to the following gradation: Passing Sieve Size 100 3 . 5" 50 - 100 3/411 25 - 100 No.4 The fraction, passing the No.4 sieve, shall have less than 15%, passing the No. 200 sieve . All fill and backfill shall be compacted to at least 95% of modified optimum density. The on-site sands will meet the above gradation and could be used for backfill . This report has been prepared for specific application to the subject project in accordance with generally accepted soil and foundation engineering practices . No other warranty, expressed or implied, is made . In the event that any changes in the nature, design and location of structures are planned, the conclusions and recommend- t Page 3 ations contained in this report should not be considered valid unless the changes are reviewed and conclusions of this report modified or verified in writing. The analyses and recommendations submitted in this report are based in part upon data obtained from referenced explorations . The extent of variation between exploration:; may not become evident until construction. If variations then appear evident, it will be necessary to re-evaluate the recommendations of this report . Clarence Welti, P.E. , P.C. should perform a general review of the final design and specifications in order that geotechnical design recommendations may be properly interpreted and implemented as they were intended.
