GENERAL PLAN TO CREATE A CAMPSITE
AT
RYE STREET PARK, SOUTH WINDSOR
Submitted by Corey Richard Holmes, Troop 62
Early this year I was present at a South Windsor Youth
Forum meeting where Ray Favrreau presented the possibility
of a campsite on town property. I approached Ray Favreau and
expressed my ideas on the subject. At that point I learned
the project was done in 1988 by Jonathan Cottle, of Troop
880 , also of South Windsor. My job would be to clean up and
recreate the campsite, and construct a sturdy bridge over
the Dry Brook. I visited the area on many times to inspect
the area and to take measurements . On most occasions I was
assisted by Shawn Lewandowski ( also of Troop 62 ) .
I have written the following report and drawn the
accompanying blue prints to submit to the commission. I hope
they are helpful during the evaluating process.
Corey Holmes Eagle Scout Project 5/9/96
The area in Rye Street Park that was proposed by
Jonathon Cottle of Troop 880 in November of 1988 is between
the once Dry Brook, and Conrail ' s railroad Tracks . The
present campsite has 5 , 000 square feet, and adequate for
groups up to fifty. Since 1988 the woods of Rye Street Park
have taken back the campsite, leaving the area virtually
inaccessible.
My project would consist of, the building of a foot
bridge, the process of trail making, and finally recreating
an accessible campsite. The methods used to remove brush,
and overgrowth will coincide with O. S.H.A. standards, B. S.A.
standards , and other safety standards enforced on South
Windsor Park workers . The project will benefit the South
Windsor citizens who enjoy camping and hiking, and wish for
something a tad bit more challenging than their back yards .
Also the Rec Department will be able to offer an overnight
camp for their 1997 summer season.
So far I have contacted Ray Favreau of the South
Windsor Rec Department numerous times for maps and guidance
on the project . Together we have developed an acceptable
plan that follows B. S.A. requirements , and building
requirements enforced on town property.
