February 9 , 1993 Supplement for Application for Town of South Windsor Zoning Board of Appeals Gerber incurrs a hardship by virtue of the current zoning regulations pertaining to size limitations of business sign standards . The size limits being ineffective for communication purpose of the sign when viewed by high speed traffic normally found along the Interstate Highway systems . Gerber ' s easterly property line is fronted by Interstate Highway I-84 . Normal traffic is moving at a legal speed limit of 55 mph. When considering line of sight , distance of the viewer and traveling speed larger sign and logo are normally required to impart the desired message . At the same time and in such manner the viewer while reading the logo does not have to impare other vehicular safety traveling on the highway at the same time . The sign as proposed should have no negative impact on abutting private property owners . The sign does not project above the main building roof line . Abutters are located several hundred feet away and sheltered by a significant tree line . The sign as proposed will be internally lighted for night time visibility . Lighting will be shielded by plastic filters and lettering will be back lighted with neon low level wattage output . All other Gerber signage located adjacent to public streets are within the zoning regulation for size . A single building wall mounted sign is also within the zoning regulations . One additional Gerber sign has been painted on the fire protection water storage tank . This is lighted for night visibility. This sign logo has existed for many years . We believe it predates the zoning regulation of the Town of South Windsor . The design is pleasant to view and may be interpreted as a town industrial employer who represents a progressive township which supports industry permitting the investment and construction of such signs .
