The excavation was made in the grass area between the sidewalk and the road curbing. The work was somewhat hampered by sewage water but the pipe was located with little difficulty. Acting as Inspector, I was on the job at all times when work was actually in progress, and there was no damage to the pipe as a result of this location process. After removing the water from the work area we noted several large rocks and stones around, and bearing upon, the pipe. Apparently this was a case of careless or negligent backfillixg on the part of the original contractor. After hand removal of the rocks and stones we picked out several pieces of the broken pipe - one (1) approximately eighteen (18) inches long, four (4) inches at its widest and tapering towards both ends. Upon assessing the damage I advised Lamson to get a 6-ixch flexible coupling from his supplier to facilitate repairs. When the material necessary for the repair had been brought to the site, the original pipe was hand-sawed on both sides of the break. Prior to installation of the replacement piece the line from there to the house was carefully cleaned and flushed. There was no need to clean the remainder from there to the main as it was already clear. While cleaning the upstream section of the lateral, we removed a section of plumber's snake approximately eight (8) or ten (10) feet in length. 33-May, 1975 ` 45 Good Hill Road --- Colonial Heights Lot No. 12, continued The repair was made with m Y-7" bell-exd length of 6" 0-rixg P.V.C. and a "Ferxco" flexible couplixg. Thex, the area of the trench immediately around and under the pipe was buckfilled and tamped by hand, using approximately 13i yards of sand. ME/ cc . Homeowner J.A. Lamson
