Dear Mr. Gantick,
Thank you for answering my letter in such a timely manner. I understand
the issue concerning the lack of funds for future projects. I am sure that it is
your policy to inform residents when their area will be reconstructed so
expect to hear from you in the future when financial matters are more stable.
The fall/winter season is good for our street as the tree on the corner has bare
branches and the visibility of the traffic pattern is greatly improved. It has
been around seven years or so since we, the residents on Slater Street,
requested the removal of that tree. You can imagine how much larger it has
grown since that time. I would suggest that the area would be looked at
again from the southern approach to Deming Street when the tree is fully
leafed out. When our street is worked on, it would only stand to reason that
the corner would be realigned in some fashion. Since funding in the future
will probably always be an issue, it would be to everyone advantage to have
these issues worked on at the same time.
Again, thank you for taking time to answer. Hopefully, these issues can be
resolved in the future.
Sincerely,
Patricia A. Thompson

Dear Ms. Thompson:
I am in receipt of your letter dated October 25, 2009. I unfortunately did not
receive any messages that you had called. Not sure who you may have talked
to. We had hoped to repave Slater Street during this fiscal year but as you may
have read in the newspaper or seen on TV funding for the Road Resurfacing and
Drainage Program was eliminated from the budget. Numerous funding sources
have been discussed by the Town Council, but no funding has been approved as
of this date. Therefore, I cannot confirm when any additional road work will take
place.
The Police Department has reviewed your concern regarding the tree at the
intersection of Slater Street and Deming Road and do not believe there to be a
sightline problem.
Very truly yours,
Michael I Gantick, Director of Public Works

Dear Mike Gantick,
I spoke with you last year concerning the condition of Slater Street. At that time you
indicted we would be on the schedule for this year. I called your office three times early
in the spring season into summer hoping for a time commitment. My calls were not
returned.
I realize that there are budget concerns and that there are ongoing projects throughout the
town of South Windsor. I am also aware that the pot holes on Slater were filled in
recently. Obviously we can't expect to have the work done this year so what would the
time frame be for resurfacing our street in the future?
There is also another issue on our street concerning the huge tree at the intersection. It
does not impact the traffic from the other directions but definitely presents a dangerous
situation for traffic leaving our street. There is no visibility when looking to the left
down Deming Street. Cars coming from the left rarely come to a full stop. Residents on
the south side of Slater requested that the tree be removed a number of years ago. It has
only gotten to be more of a hazard.
Is there any way that intersection could be made safer, such as,removing the tree and
squaring off the street? It would be great if Steve Lavigueur could have the tree relocated
to the fitness trail area since fall is a good time for that to happen. With both departments
working together in a timely manner, the job would be completed with the safety of our
neighborhood in mind.
I would appreciate hearing from you.
Sincerely, `
Patricia A. Thompson

Karl, I went through all four sides of the intersection without a problem. I would suspect that any problems
occurring there would be attributed to inattentive driving or stop sign violations rather than a sight line issue.

Mike, I have looked at this tree very recently, and didn't have a problem seeing the car at the stop sign on the
intersecting street. I will ask Chris Duchesne to review the situation with me.

I received a letter from Mrs.Thompson on Slater asking about removal/relocation of the tree at the intersection.
She says it is affecting sightline. We went through this before it seems. What was the final decision?
